Lakers in Monksville?

What's the real story on Lakers in Monksville? I've heard variously from people who claimed to be in the know that...

1. They were stocked in the beginning, but they haven't been stocked in a decade or more, and it's doubtful any are left.

2. They have never been stocked there.

3. It is still actively being stocked with lakers.

So what's the real deal with lakers there? I don't think I've encountered anyone who appeared to be targeting them. Though I did try drifting a herring on the bottom in the deep water last summer, which turned out to be a waste of time.

Lake trout were DEFINITELY stocked in there. As a last ditch effort to get rid of them since Round Valley and Merrill Creek Res were already infested with them, they dumped the remaining fish in Monks. That was the last we have ever seen or heard of anymore lake trout stocking, went out with a wimper.

Agreed - yes they are still in there, correct NJ stopped stocking lakers anywhere and that they are most likely successfully reproducing in there like Merrill and the Valley...

Any idea what year that was?

Well the verdict is in. I'm going to hope Franks has herring and give it a shot this week, maybe tomorrow.

Though I fish there several times a year I've never seen anglers who appeared to be going after lakers. Most I see are hitting the shore line for bass or casting for muskie in the coves.

Has anyone here ever targeted lakers in Monks and was there any degree of success? Unlike Merrill Creek and Round Valley which are full of people going after lakers, it seems that they may be an unexploited resource in Monks. Perhaps there are some monsters lurking in the depths.

You start deep dropping herring in Monks this time of year you could come up with just about anything.

Quick search shows they were stocked in there as recently as 2013. I fish Monks a decent amount and haven't seen or heard of any landed.

Re: Lakers in Monksville?

I feel like they're a species that you might not run into as bycatch as often as other species so it's not surprising that this is a bit of a mystery...i'm very curious to know your results after you target them there.

also take note that lake trout season is closed on merrill and rvr i believe so you can't keep any and if you pull them from the depths too quick they may need to be 'burped' in order to survive.

If Frank (TACKLE & FIELD) do not have then go the PAINTBALL place on the GREENWOODLAKE TURNPIKE about 1 mile NORTH of MONKSVILLE. They always have herring.

TRIVIA QUESTION: WHAT DID THAT PAINBALL PLACE USED TO BE??? Hint FATSFOOD who made the claim to fame on a soft drink...

Scott H-U see, TRADER MIKE was not lying to us.

Went to Monks this evening. Got on the water about 5:30 and did some bass fishing. No takers, so for ha ha's I went to 75 feet and dropped a 1/2 oz. Spro jig over the side and jigged the deep water for about 45 minutes. It was nice and calm so my line was vertical and I was bouncing it off the bottom, but nothing.

Even in rvr you'd be surprised how concentrated they can be this time of year. You really need a good spot. A good hump, cool spring, something.

I was @ CORRADO'S in WAYNE last TUESDAY after work & they had about 8 WALLEYE about 8-12 lbs each which they called YELLOW PIKE.

I asked the fish monger where were the fish caught & he said locally caught in NJ.

Saw a lot of fish suspended between 15 and 50 feet, but only marked a few in 70+ FOW.

Could also be my fishfinder, not exactly top of the line. A very basic Garmin.
