fluking in montauk
 

I am going to be fishing in Montauk in 2 weeks for the first time. Any one fish enough there that can tell me what kind of rigs and bait to try. any input would be great thanks

Yea i already have poles and reels ready. Cant wait. Never fished montauk but the guy im going with has gone a few times ive see his pictures

I have a friend that jus spent 2 weeks out there. He said big Peruvian spearing was the bait of choice for the bigger fish. He had a bunch of fish over 5lbs. The biggest was 8.2 that he caught while fishing a tournament. Good luck.

Official world record fluke was caught in Montauk and from what I understand it was caught on a large snapper bluefish.

Having been stationed there in the Coast Guard I will give you a little advise about fishing there. Early on and early off the water. The afternoon chop there is notorious due to the cold water and heat over the land and about 3-4 in the afternoon it can really get honking and chop it up bigtime. Also the fog that happens out there is like nothing you have ever seen before and a good radar and GPS are a must.

As the Shrimpman has often called it, Montauk is like the promised land and the fishing out there can be nothing short of spectacular.

I caught my personal best fluke of 10.8 lbs there back about 8 years ago on a 3 oz. Spro jig. I usually use a 3 way swivel with a short dropper loop to hold the jig or weight. That way as the drift increases or slows down, you can quickly adjust your weight or jig. I then just have a 24"-36" leader with a hook to drag bait behind the jig. Rule of thumb is slow drift you use a short leader and fast drift a longer leader. The Spro I caught that on was the green and white one. I hope you have good luck!

When you catch your fish, suggestion, take some of them to the Wok 'N Woll in town....you have the choice of 8 different ways to cook up your fish...all of them tasty.

Fished this miss Montauk twice last week and conditions were perfect. Make sure you got heavy weight up to 14 ozs and 40 lb leader. Caught some nice quality fish. 6 in nuc chicken with Peruvian separing was the bait. An elderly couple near fish with that all day and had 26 keepers with 8 fish over 5 lbs. They also use a chicken rig, which is weight on bottom and two small bucktails on drooper loops. All conventional rods and reel. no spinning rods with bucktails like we use in NJ. Fishing just so much better in Montauk.

14 oz weights? i hope your just joking. how deep are they fishing usually. I plan on using bucktails tipped with gulp at the bottom than above that dropper loop with a number 4 circle hook or light bucktail. I always catch fish with this set up. they are just not always keepers. def want to bring some live bait as well. shrimpman good luck let me know how it goes. I saw they have striper trips from 6 pm to 12. might do fluke in morning and than stripers at night

Full moon tides... He's not joking about the 14 oz weights. I'm heading out tomorrow night. Fishing cod sea bass fluke and porgies. Maybe whack some stripers on eels at night, we'll see what the old man wants to do!

Ur still on moon so u may require those heavier weights , I've used BT's to 10oz up there on some days just to hold ! Not always but be prepared or could be long day . :cool:

Changes daily. I fished the south side all day with a three ounces btail in 60 feet of water. I had six keepers to five pounds
