Lure making time
ill wait till Saturday to do a slop fest ice fishing so I continued making some lures I know I'll need soon. Kietech swim baits are great but they basically are destroyed from one fish so I just make my own, just as flexible and salty exact same design but more durable and custom colored to whatever I want. Also some more trolling flies. Gotta make some more colors of the swimbaits and some twister tail grubs and I'll be ready for some spring domination! Got a mess of bucktails made too, but mostly use those for fluke.

Re: Lure making time
what are some favorite spring lure colors? i was going to do some pearl whites and perch colors (maybe some green hue with orange and yellow flakes) for the swimbaits. can't wait for hopatcong to open up the ice! It's so sloppy now at this point i'm saying, come on heat! sorry ice maniacs! I will most likely go jigging one last time on the ice, but i might just wear my rain boots hahahaha.

Re: Lure making time
Very cool!
Care to share what you used to make the molds and what you use for the actual rubber for the swimbaits? |
Re: Lure making time
Nice job Chris! I just bought a bunch of Kietech's for my florida trip, I love those baits. I should have called you, lol!

Re: Lure making time
The molds are made out of rtv silicone. It comes in two parts and you mix it by weight and pour it around the original. The hard part for those swimbaits is I had to do it in sections and build a little clay holder for it because of its fragile shape. Then I cut a cross section on the tail so it comes out near perfect almost every time.
The plastic is plastisol and I mix it with a softener (in this case) and I threw in a bunch of salt and some herring sent too. Put glitter or whatever in the mold and pour it in hot from the microwave. |
Re: Lure making time
do you pour your own lead for the bucktails or do you buy them plain and do them up?
|
Re: Lure making time
Pour them myself

Re: Lure making time
Great job !! If you or anyone else make spinner baits, I have about 100 spinner baits that the rubber tails are off. I never got rid of them, just put them in a box. I am sure most of the hooks are good and all the blades are in great shape. Let me know before I throw them all out !

Re: Lure making time
Those sea robin colored bucktails are gorgeous. What's the smallest u spin? Free swinging hooks?

Re: Lure making time
msgdan, i don't have the stuff to make the rubber skirts/tails, but honestly if i was you, i'd buy a bulk pack of the skirts ready to go. or just stick a big grub on the hook and use it as is with no skirt. I've done that in certain situations and something a little different might make a difference on a high pressure area!
jigman, i can do 2,3,4,5,6,and 8oz like those. those don't have free swinging hooks, but i've been wanting to try to make them like that...in my head it will work how i'm thinking of doing it, but i haven't tried it yet...you know what i'm going to try it when i get home today, i'll let you know how it goes! |
Re: Lure making time
sweet theyre real good looking

Re: Lure making time
Nice work!!

Re: Lure making time
Thanks guys. I may have had success making a free swinging hook version, but I guess I won't know till I hook a fluke with it haha.
|
Re: Lure making time
Let's see it!
And those flies would make for great teasers for cod and fluke if tied on 4/0 & 5/0 hooks... |
Re: Lure making time
I have to paint it and dig through my stuff to find a hook for it, I might not have a perfect size but I'm sure I have something that will work. Never caught cod but I've def thought of using the flies as teasers for fluke haha.
