steelhead fishing in pulaski

I was thinking of trying to catch some steelhead next weekend in upstate ny. I've caught a few before while salmon fishing in the fall but I have never tried to target them. Are they even running right now? Also, what type of gear and equipment do you use. I would assume I could use the same rod but would probably use fluorocarbon. Also, I use the stocking foot waders for salmon fishing but I read that they ate not good for this time of year because it is so cold and that I should use boot foot wader. Thanks for the help!

they are in the river from when the salmon are in up til march april, this time of year they will mostly hit flashy nympths wooly buggers in diffrent colors pink being a hit one mostly because of the water being so cold the flash off the fly will help trigger the fish.if your gonna be spin nightcrawlers berkley pink worms like you woukd use for trout here. they pretty much hold in the deep pools lust like as in the fall. also there are browns that are in the river will take the nightcrawlers too, remeber to have the right amount of weight on for your stretch or pool your fishing,as long as u layer in fleece you will be fine one thngs i found theres no cure for is your feet. sit there and wiggle your toes lol goodluck man

Nice fish! When was this?

Just a word of caution about fishing Pulaski right now. Most of the river is most probably locked up due to lower than usual temps. Those areas w faster water that may remain open have shelf ice, which is quite dangerous to traverse. I would wait for a significant warm up.

Why do recommend oswego?

Very dangerous at Oswego w shelf ice as well. Split and fall etc. people have been known to die

I talked to some locals up there and they said there isn't enough water to do a drift trip but he would do a wading trip. I figured they would know what is dangerous and what isnt. Thoughts?

Personally would recommend Olcott.

As of last week still plenty of trout and steelheads as well as surprisingly fresh salmon hanging around.

Area is not frozen as of yet but regardless pays to be cautious.

Where Is olcott in regards to pulaski?

I was up 2 weeks ago and did well fishing around Altmar. You are going to want to fish that end of the river as slush ice will most likely become a factor the lower you go. Korkers or some kind of spikes are a must and I would not recommend fishing with out them. It is going to be cold so make sure you layer up well and carry extra gloves & heat packs. The information you received on boot foot vs stocking foot waders is accurate. You will last a longer in the water with the boot foot. If you have to buy a pair bump the boot size up +1 so you have a little extra room and you can double up on socks. I am going to try and get up there tomorrow for the weekend.... If I do I will report back with conditions.

More out west toward Buffalo so much longer drive. I think its like half an hour away from Niagara falls.

But in terms of fishing I have enjoyed it more (maybe because I had better luck there than Pulaski)

Altmar has fly sections only which goes from the bridge both ways. Some fish to be had there as well just make sure you have everything up to the laws since those areas are heavily patrolled by COs

I've never fly fished before so I'm not sure what to do.

FYI, the Lower fly zone in Altmar is on the upstream side of the bridge. The downstream side of the bridge is OK for spinning, center pin, eggs sacks, etc.

I'd I was gonna do a drift I'd either call Row Jimmy or chasing tail. Both are on the sr. If You're looking to drift oswego call kevin davis, catch the drift. My trip of choice is with Kevin in oswego.

Thanks for heads up. I just assumed both sides were and usually just go more upstream floating egg sacks by the river bend.

Good to know.

They said the water is too low to drift the river. ..unfortunately.

Re: steelhead fishing in pulaski

Togman, saw only 3 drift boats launch in Altmar this weekend (1 Sat and 2 on Sunday). It was cold and fishing was on the slow side... I fought 7 and landed 1 about 13 pounds. Heard from someone ice and slush was an issue in Pulaski and downstream from there but since I stayed around Altmar I can not confirm. If you go up good luck.
