first time trying gulp

i havent been on a party boat for fluke in a while...next month ill be going out and im going to give gulp a try. im going to use a bucktail with a teaser and was wondering if you guys put gulp on the teaser as well as the jig or only the jig... or if you have any other recomendations as far as gulp/ bait combo or anything. thanks for any info!

Everyone does something a little different. This is what I do. On my jig heads with no hair I use a Gulp 6" worm typically white or green, the ones with hair I actually don't use Gulp and just spice it up with a spearing. Then up about 12"-18" I tie a big dropper loop and use a Gulp 6" nuclear chicken mullet.

1st make sure you got big enough bucktails for a pb. bring bucktails from 2-8oz. majority of the time 3-5 will be sufficient but ya never know.
I fish a bucktail on the bottom with a big strip bait & stinger hook
10-18inches up from that depending on drift speed, slower drift higher the drop loop,i will tie a dropper loop & a 3/0- 5/0 baitholder & put a 4-6inch gulp swimming mullet or grub in glow, chartreuse or nuke chicken.
make sure you are fishing enough weight to not foul up errrryoooone around ya & good luck!

Good advice above... If you are not using braided line I suggest you do that as well if the boat allows it, some don't. It will allow you to hold bottom with less weight and is super sensitive so strikes are much easier to feel.

You don't need to respool the entire reel, just add a 50 yard top shot on top of the mono using a uni to unit knot and the do the same at the end to tie it into your mono bucktail rig.

Double bucktail and you will be on the bottom.Nice when your in the bay and can use a 2oz. bucktail but that is not always the case on a party boat. August is deep channel time so come prepared! Big sinker on the bottom and a 3/8 oz. spro above also works.:)

Re: first time trying gulp

i wont due braid on a party boat bc i dont want to end up in some drunkies cluster***k lol... whats theta? is it like leadcore?

Re: first time trying gulp

All good advice I would go with braid with a 20 foot top shot of floro or mono on top of the braid to help with tangles. Any more the 20 feet and you might as well just use mono cause most spots will not be more the 50 feet unless you are fishing Ambros.

Re: first time trying gulp

honestly im probably just going to use a rental and bring a spool of flouro with me... my only braid rig is my shimano baitrunner and im not bringing that on a party boat

Steve - your going to have a hell of a time working a bucktail on most party boat rental rods I've seen.... Tips are way too firm to produce the bouncing action you need and poles much too heavy to work jigging all day. Can it be done, I guess but you'd be much better off with your Shimano bait runner braid set up if you want to bucktail.

As I'm writing this I can see it now...... 12 year old beats out Steve for the pool with a whitsle fish jigged on a rental rod :)

Re: first time trying gulp

true... maybe ill bring a MH ugly stik... ive just seen so many incredibly fouled up tangles and when they cross braid, theres no coming back lol. id rather run mono and have a better chance of keeping my $6 jig

Re: first time trying gulp

how light would you go on the rod if youre using a 4oz bucktail? looks like some guys are going pretty light in pictures but im assuming theyre probably in the bays with lighter jigs

Sound advice so far... Don't have much else to add, just curious what boat you're heading on? Sounds like the Highlands?

probably the fisherman or capt cal

Re: first time trying gulp

The bucktailing done these days are pretty gear dependent. If you don't want to use braid, just drag bait with your rental rod. Bait is catching this year, often better than jig/gulp.

Re: first time trying gulp

Steve 2oz and even 1.5oz will get you To the bottom with 30lb braid and 10ft mono 25#top shot dont bother with flouro too $$$ use mono fluke aint leader shy.

Jigs: bring the heavier ones just in case. on the bottom rig dont need buck tails cheaper alternative plain lead head bullet style, if fishing the sand use the bucktail jig if you want, but in the sticky stuff youll loose the jig or bucktai anyway.
jig color dont mean squat stay w/ white .
Fluke are after the gulp , on the jig use the 6inch GRUB GULP youll see how it slides up to the back of the bullet head jig and looks natural and has a barb on it the fluke cant pull it off . Colors white , nuclear chicken , pink shine lately chartreuse has not produced. On the top hook 7/0 BAITHOLDER hook and use the 6inch glow white swiming mullet, most of the strikes will come on the top hook with the 6inch mullet.
You can also try the 6inch grub on the top hook.
