Rod recomendations
I had the opportunity to pick up my dream reel, a Zee Baas 25. Bought off a friend on the cheap (well not cheap but at a fraction of the cost).
Obvious it will be a spinning rod mainly for ocean fishing on 6 pack boats for our inshore stripers, blues, ect. I don't think I'll be tuna popping but if I keep it up with Fish Stix one never knows. :D Thinking of something in the 7 foot size. I mainly boat fish and kayak fish the NJ waters. Thinking of a red Trevla but searching other options. I have Bogans for bottom and like em, just not sure on his spinners. Suggestions??????? Thx. |

Re: Rod recomendations
Back to Kevin's .... I have over 1/2 dozen Bogan Customs and love every one of them. I have 2 -7' spinning rods for boat fishing and they've been great. One for jigging and one for snag/dropping bunker. I also have a ZeeBass 25 which I only use for Beach/Jetty fishing. :D

Re: Rod recomendations
After looking at the Shimano line the Terez was what I meant to post.
Bogan is a thought as well however i just wanted some feedback on his spinners from those who have em. I use his coventional rods with no complaints. What about a Garone? Any feedback? The ZB will be mainly used off of the beach on a surf rod but just wanting an option for when i spin fish from a boat. If anything snag and drop bunker, castning to surface fish, and in blue fish blitzes. The reel is way overkill for anything I do or will ever do but the price was fair and it is just something nice I always had an eye for. |
Re: Rod recomendations
I wouldnt recommend using a bailess reel on a boat but definitely from the surf. On my 2 bogan boat spinners I have the new Quantum Cabo PT (which is so much lighter then the older model) and a Penn Battle 5000 on the other. Both work fine.. and the epoxy and guides are much better on the rods. Just pick out the right blank for the fishing youre doing:D

Re: Rod recomendations
Why not bail less on a boat?
What Bogan would you recommend for bass/blues from a boat being you have one? I usually use spinners to Snag and drop bunker, for bass, and tossing metal to bass and blues. Agreed on the better epoxied/wrapped guides. I also have the Battle 5000 on a Shimano rod that I use to snag and drop but I want to up grade. I use an old Mitchell 303 from the surf which has been re done. It is bail less, drilled out and has a VS look, upgraded with bearings, and an upgraded drag. Painted black with polished chrome side plate and spool. Its killer old but keeps up with the best of em. I always get asked where I got my custom VS, I laugh. Thx |
Re: Rod recomendations
i have a couple of bogan roads, they perform great. also heard a lot of good things about garrone and billy vivona.

Re: Rod recomendations
The main reason I use bailess from the surf is so I can really wing those poppers, swimmers, metal way out without the bail shutting and snapping my braid. I use the ZB 25 and also the VS 200 from Spring till Fall. Once it starts getting colder i use my VSB 150, which is the Van Staal with a manual bail, cause it's so much easier with gloves on. I haven't had the need to cast like that from boats so I haven't used bailess out there. But, like everything else, everybody is different and that's why there are so many reels and rods. (and also to keep us spending money) And I still use my Mitchell 300 for freshwater fishing which I got in 1966 and still works perfectly.:D

Re: Rod recomendations
The reels probably cost a few bucks. Here s what I can do.
A fish poison glass stick starts at $149. It will have EVA foam grips, Ring lock ceramics, double coat epoxy, a flanged ring tip. Cork can be added for $30. colors can be added for $30, You will get your name and favorite fish decal. If you bring in the reel we can go over the details. You can do graphites and composites for yet another $30. $150-200 will get you a killer stick that will compliment the high quality o the reel. compare to any rod that costs $300, my opinion? no contest.;) |
Re: Rod recomendations
If your looking at spending that kind of money.... look into a light popping rod. I use a 125 gram popping rod for the surf, bass, blues and it also doubles as my I shore tuna rod too. Your not gonna beat the power, action it. Will throw 2-8 ozs with 2-6 ozs being the sweet spot.
It's a 1pc / 2pc. Design. Easy to travel with with a 30 butt section and rest of it is the top Section. 7'6" overall length. Too many guys hear popping rods and think tuna. This 125 gram model is ideal for 90% of NJ fishing. Lifetime Warranty on it too. You can get more info online. Or stop to see it in our shop. We have an 80 gram coming out this year too. As well as an 8'6" model. Just a suggestion. Teresa is a nice rod but this blank offers much more in the way of variety. It puts my distance casting surf rods to shame that I have used for years. |
Re: Rod recomendations
Dave that is a sweet reel. For what you want to do with it I have several models that will work great and can be customized to suit your style of fishing perfectly. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call or shoot me over an email.

Re: Rod recomendations
Dave, a top-end reel like that doesn't deserve to belong on just any rod. :)
I have had Mike Garone build my fishing buddies and I many rods in the last few years for several very different fisheries from inshore to offshore and they have been hands down the nicest rods we've used. Whatever your budget, Mike will work with you and make sure you receive something that is uniquely built to your personal preference, style, and intended use. When you go the custom route you shouldn't be limited to simply choosing from "x, y or z" when it comes to blanks, components, and decorative work. Mike will provide something that is truly one-of-a-kind, built to your demands, that will perform likewise. Additionally, not only does Mike put top-tier craftsmanship into his work but he is also an avid fisherman (something not every builder is, believe it or not), so he understands what it means when demanding fisherman are looking for something specific. If you have any questions, or are unsure how you want to exactly go about your build, Mike will help clear up any confusion regarding the pro's and con's of every choice you make. Not to mention, when you compare Garone's prices to a factory equivalent, you often find that he is often cheaper or, if not, right in the ballpark. It's hard to go wrong with a Garone custom rod and I highly recommend him to anyone in the market for their next rod. |
Re: Rod recomendations
Hoping to get the reel in my hands by this weekend.
A custom rod is what I am going to do. I will be in touch with both Kevin and Mike to see what better suits me and I will go from there. Thanks to all. |
Re: Rod recomendations
One peice of advise that has been passed down to me that i value most...b4 you get tje custom rod know what you want and i don't mean by the person wrapping it...many of the old timers and buddy's that been there done that have always talked me down from a custom rod for now not b.c they don't wan't me to have one but.to Experience different characteristics that one rod may possess over another while one may have the stiffness one might have a lighter whipping backbone to shoot those needles out far my only suggestion would to be check out some factory rods then go from there i personally fell in love with a slingshot that was 1oft 6 however it cracked this fall on the roof racks after being struck by a rock
