Really not trying to be funny here. Use standard bass lures, if the fish are biting you'll catch them, if not, you won't.

My advice would to be to fish Stone Tavern instead.

There's a canal that runs across the lake that is a little deeper. If you find that then you should be good. I have a hard time finding it because I don't have a depth finder.

If you stand on the boat launch ramp and look across the lake to the right at about 45 degrees you'll see a small island near the dam.

I believe the deepest water in the lake (about 15 feet) is on the right corner of the island. That's where I do best ice fishing in the winter.

Well was on the water by about 1030 and off by 315. I went with my step dad and we fished from a scanoe with a small minkota pushing us. He hasnt fished in years and was happy as could be just to be out there. Ive never fished this lake before so your advice helped. No pics but I caught 2 bass the largest 13inches and a perch on shiners. and a crappie, perch and blue gill on a top water Rapala. My step dad got the stinky one! But it was beautiful on the water and a great day! We are gonna head out again next wednesday. Not sure where. Im in middlesex so maybe Ill make a thread asking where we should go lol.

The other two lakes on the WMA are really worth fishing. I haven't fished Rising Sun but I know a lot of people say the fishing is great. I have fished Stone Tavern on several occassions and have had much better success than I've had on Assunpink. Assunpink is listed as a Lunker Bass Lake and I think it gets more pressure because of that. I know they have tournaments out there too. I've caught some nice fish in Assunpink, but I've had lots of big number days with bigger fish on Stone Tavern.

Rising Sun is fairly unique for a central Jersey pond in that it reaches a depth of about 21' and the water is crystal clear. Big yellow perch in there and good numbers of largemouth bass that become quite aggressive when they are feeding, it is not uncommon to observe surface feeding blitzes.

Re: Assunpick advice

Can you launch a 16' deep V in Rising Sun or Stone Tavern? The NJ site says there is a launch at both but sometimes the interpretation of "what is a launch" can be a bit generous. :) Thanks for any info.

Haven't been to Stone Tavern in awhile, but I don't remember there being and issues with the launch. I know guys launch their big fiberglass bass boats in there so I don't see it being and issue.

No dock at either location, but the launches are fine.

Thanks catfish and jeepster.....I always like to hit the Electric only or 9.9 lakes durng summer or on weekends. Way less boat traffic and no wakes! Makes for a nicer day in my opinion.

I launch a 16' deep V at both Stone Tavern and Rising Sun with no problem.

I don't know what everyone is talking about when they are directing you to the other two lakes, are they trying to say the big lake is no good? I fished the big lake for the first time ever this spring. Both times I caught about 8 bass up to 3 1/4 lbs and I am no BASSMASTER. I don't think there is any big trick to bass fishing. When they are biting they will just about jump into the boat. Case in point I was fishing Mercer this year for the first time ever. I was throwing a crankbait while my wacky worm was hanging off the boat just barely touching the water. When I hit the trolling motor to move to another spot there was a bass on my worm. Other times I can't catch a fish to save my life.

Yeah,
But don't forget that Lake Mercer is probably the only lake in the Central Jersey area which is stocked with Muskies. Both pure strain Muskellunge and Tiger Muskies are in this lake and some bruisers over 50 inches have been caught.....some of them probably caught by guys fishing for LMB.

The only strange thing about this lake is that they don't allow ice fishing, whereas you can ice fish on Assumpink, Stone Tavern and Rising Sun.
