1000 Islands Just Got Back

Was up there for a week. Great weather for camping, breezy and mid 70s during the day and Mid 50s at night. Stiff breeze was not good for boating and fishing. Drift was really fast and anchoring in certain spots was bouncy.

I did however manage to fish a few late afternoons. Caught several smallmouth up to 3 pounds or so and 4 large mouth with one around the 4.5 mark.

Most fish caught on 5 inch Senkos whacky rigged with drop shot. Others caught on worms Lindy rigged. Most were caught drifting and tossing the Senkos and worms in 25 to 40 feet of water. Had to cast out ahead of the drift so they'd would sink down to the bottom before the boat drift would catch up to them and drag them off the bottom and too fast.

First time fishing Senkos for me. A fun way to fish....They probably are way more effective when the drift is slower or when anchored up with less wind, especially when you are fishing deep water.

Nice report. I'm not familiar with that area, where is it?

glad you were able to salvage what sounds like some pretty nice fish! any pics?

when the breeze is blowing like that, and i want to go slow, i love my drift sock. i keep it tied to the bow, so it keeps the boat pointed directly into the wind, perfectly aimed to ride any rollers the wind kicks up.

Glad to hear u at least got out and got on some fish, those smallies up there are a blast, fight like hell esp when they are deep.

wind = Ipilot Terrova w spotlock. that is the ticket, just press a button on the remote and fish without worries, nose is always into the rollers ;)

Its in upper NY state, awesome area, upstateNY has some of the best fishing in the NE united states, not to mention the great lakes and the salmon river.

Sounds like it was a good time!!! Family Time and some nice smallies!!!!
Drift sock or even 5 gallon bucket might have helped with the drift.

100 miles north of Syracuse NY on the boarder of Canada where the St Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario.

.

Sounds like a great vacation.

I never heard of it either, so I googled "thousand islands".
I see it's that area where the St. Lawrence River enters Lake Ontario.

Drift sock would have helped but still a bit uncomfortable for the family.

To make a bucket easier to retrieve (5 gallons of water weighs 40lbs) Drill a whole in the bottom of the bucket and insert a heavy eye bolt through it with the eye on the outside. Use a large washer and nut on each side of the bolt to secure it place...the washers will give your more support on the thinner bucket bottom and prevent it from breaking through the hole. Tie one end of a 12ft rope to the handle of the bucket and the other to the eye. When retrieving pull the bucket in by the end tied to the eye bolt...this flips and empties the bucket and makes it much easier to pull in....especially in a stronger wind. Basically this make it work just like a drift sock.....and Home Depot 5 gallon buckets are only 3 bucks each.

Good report from a beautiful area. Can't beat Smallies on Sencos for steady action.

The 1000 Islands area is one of the most scenic place I've ever been to. I would love to have a small cabin on one of those islands. All I need is a lot more $$$$.

For my taste one of the most scenic places in the US and also helps that it's practically polluted with Smallies.

By far my most favorite fishery. If the fishing isn't cooperating there's always the scenery. I also enjoy the antique boat show and antique boat museum in Clayton, by Alexandria Bay. My father's favorite fishery is right up there too, Black lake. He goes in early June and kills it every year for about the last decade.
