Big D, Big Cats, Overnighter, 8/2
 

Hit the big river last night prepared to do battle with some river monsters. I was in it for the long haul. I brought my tent, firewood, sleeping bag, food and enough beer for 3 people. I was the only soldier out on the ROCK last night and I couldn't of been happier. Made bait and started fishing around 530-6 pm. Cats were on the prowl last night, 1st fish was a channel @ 2.5 lbs that inhaled a 5 inch Gill. That was around 630, after that it was pure mayhem, rods were flying in the river and I jumped in after them. Next 3 cats were all Channels in the 4-5 lb range, good eating size. 9 pm, something picks up my hacked up live Eel, set the hook, FISH-ON, YEA BUDDY!!!! Feels like a good fish and its peeling drag like a freight train. Got the beast in, YES, Channel weighing in @ 11 lbs 6 oz. Oh yea, now I'm fired up. Got 1 more 5 lber after the beast around 930. Than it slows down, still getting hits and run-offs but the fish weren't inhaling the bait like they were earlier. 1030, lines slowly peeling off the reel so I open the bail to make sure this fish can have his way with the bait. The fish stops so I reel in the slack and go to set the hook......................... FISH-ON!!!! Feels like another beast, drags screaming off the reel again. Finally after pulling her out of the rocks and almost going for a swim, the beast is landed. Flathead, my biggest one so far, weighed 9 lbs 11 oz. What a fight!!! This fish did not want to come in. Unbelievable fishing last night with 9 Cats landed, 8 Channels and 1 Flathead. Action died off around 11 but I stuck it out til 2 just to see if anything else wanted to come out to play. Went to camp, set a fire, had a few more beers and just sat in my camp chair smiling. I had this spot to myself all night, does life get any better? WOW! GOOD TIMES!!! TIGHT LINEZ!!!:D

P.S. The 2 big Cats are both Flatheads. I goofed in the initial report. First Flathead, 11 lbs 6 oz, 2nd Flathead 9 lbs 11 oz.

My bad folks, the 2 big cats are both Flatheads. First one was 11 lbs 6 oz, 2nd one is 9 lbs 11 oz. Thats 7 Channels and 2 Flatheads for last nights catch. I need a beer and a nap. TIGHT LINEZ!!!

Awesome night man, that's a nice channel, I fished the same area I've been last night with the same baits and got the skunk, Oh well that how it goes, Glad somebody picked the right area to fish, thanks for the report

Hey buddy that's quit a night of fishen and you were with somebody you like. At least I hope you liked them. Well I guess the contest for maniac fisherman is on and the contender are you and Dale, we will see what he's up to this weekend I'm sure, I heard rumors.

Phil, I wanted to call you to see if you'd come down for a visit. Something inside me said, just sit there and fish and enjoy the peace and quiet. That I did, it was a great night out there my friend. I was gona call you at 6 am to see if I could stop by for breakfast. I don't think that would've been a good idea!!!

Eddie, glad to hear you had "One of those nights".... I've told you about my times where I couldn't keep em off my line at this spot, 7lbs small and 15lbs large with another 1/2 dozen in between...... Tight lines bro, way to go. All of my best luck has been straight thru August.

No doubt in my mind theres 20+ LB lurking.. shit prob a 30..Way to be man...QUESTION any one know the name of that lil bait shop in alpha or p-burg that's in the basement of the dudes house?? He always got ells..if u been their ud know I forget were it is..

It's called Bills bait and tackle in Phillipsburg. I'm not sure they are still around. There is also Muller's general store. It's on 611 just north of Riegelsville and they carry eels and shiners. There is also the Owls nest in the area between Warren glen and Alfa. They have herring shiners and several other types of live bait and are full time sport shop.

Bills was a great shop, when we where kids he use to front us eels until payday on Friday, he was a great person, unfortunately he passed away a few years ago, not too many guys like him around anymore, Now I get my eels from river rats on 611 N of easton

Your a animal, sometimes those solo trips are golden. Sweet fish bro, since you had the camp fire only thing that could have made it better would have been fresh beer battered fish and chips!!!! Way to go buddie!!!!

That's awesome. Amazing photos.

I don't wanna blow up your spot, but I've been wanting to do river front camping for a while, but I haven't found a place, especially secluded. I've found some lakefront grounds, but the sites all seem close together and I don't want to have to tune out neighbors/kids.

Was this a sanctioned campground/state park/camping area or do you have a spot where people are unlikely to stumble upon you?

Thanx fellas!!! The spot is not a campground but people camp there constantly. Its a beautiful spot. You gotta pull up and keep your fingers crossed that you get there first and get your stuff set up before anybody else. You wont be bothered at this spot. :D

nice job eddie, way to nail them. I actually got a nice 3lb cat yesterday at 11am on a binsky jiggin in LH under bluebird skies, a first for me they catch everything! Keep that CAT mojo going, we got less than 2 weeks til the contest we need some money cat$ to show up
