Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
Why do so many people use those stupid hooks? They are absolutely the worst hooks ever invented and should be banned for all the fluke they kill.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
I know what you mean but have always fished these hooks but like you said a lot of gut hooks. So I bought 5/0 size this year and so far in 3 trips no gut hooks so happy about that. Have tried circles but still the like the english type hooks.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
We try to encourage our customers to switch over to an Octopus Style Hook because of this same reason. I know many fish are hurt just by the way they are handled before the release, but a hook in the throat is a death sentence.
Fluke have a very large mouth and we have caught shorts on 8/0 hooks intended for another species. a 5/0 is the ideal size, maybe a 4/0, but nothing smaller than that. There are some interesting videos of fluke taking the bait online. They can follow your bait as long as 3 or 4 minutes sometimes. It was a learning experience watching this. I will see if I can find them....... but once you watch them, you will realize that a 5/0 Octopus Hook is not going to miss fish. They either ambush their prey, or they follow it a while. Either way, that hook is getting inhaled. |

Most people that use English style hooks are using pre tied rigs and can't tie their own rig too.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
You can gut hook a fish with any hook but english bends are far more difficult to remove. Long shank hooks are no good for the same reason, you can't spin the hook around in the fishes throat to remove it. Short shank octopus hooks are the best like the Gamakatsu, Owner etc. Even cheap octopus hooks are better than those stupip English bends. Put the word out, guys. Cut those awful hooks off and replace them.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
Agree with ol padro, if its a short don't even bother trying remove the hook just cut the leader and give that fish the best chance of surviving by letting the hook rust out without having its guts wrenched on. Now if that baby's a keeper, remove hook, bleed out, throw in da ice bath and get back down there.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
They do kill lots of short fluke, they should be outlawed

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
I'm a big fan of the English hook I use the gold colored ones they rust away more quickly then any other hook I have seen. Just try this dip ur hand in the ocean, reach into a bag of these hooks. Don't wash the salt water off. Go back to that bag of hooks the next day and you will see exactly what I mean.

Re: Worst hooks ever the English Bend/Kahle
I am not much of a fluke fisherman, I fish for them off the Delaware shore for a week or two. I did finally figure out what was mentioned above, hooks size 4/0 and larger work best!!! I too prefer the Gami Octo hooks, but the big kahle hooks also work well. Probably do rust out quicker too.
