GO TO for Trout................

With this lousy weather that won't let up I've been doing a little spring cleaning - going thru my tackle and getting ready for opening day! I know not everyone on the site trout fishes but a large majority of us do so.......
What's Your GO TO bait or lure for Trout? Whether you fish the streams and rivers or lakes, When it's on the line what's YOUR CHOICE??????

Mine is a nice juicy baby crawler or a Mike's Deluxe salmon egg!!!!
And as I've said before I'm mostly a BAIT GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey GetaNet I'm a bait guy to. My favorite has to be a Mikes Shrimp Egg, seconds a meal worm, then a baby crawler or a salt minnow all floated under a bobber. My buddy Tom usually fishes artificials so we have the best of both and who ever hits we'll both go to that. But I must admit I'm a little stubborn, I like my bait.

A 1/16 oz white rooster tail, or an all silver panther martin are my go to lures. Bait wise my number one choice would be free worms you get from your backyard, and then if I have money I;ll get butter worms.

AHHHHHH, a couple Rooster Tails, a couple Rapalas and always some kind of Pheobe in my box. Then comes a container of crawlers and an emergency jar of POWER CHEEEEEEEEZE!!!! If all of that fails I have 1/4 sticks "BLOCKBUSTERS" readily available at any given time!!!:D

I've done real well with trout magnets. Kind of a shaking jigging retrieve works... vary the speeds, drift, etc to find where fish are and what they want.

catches other fish as well :)

I've n e v e r done well with eggs of any sort. Do you salt and harden them up before using? always seem to just pop off and / or if I do get them out there... picked off with being detected.

Re: GO TO for Trout................

2012 was the year of the small rapala and yo zuri pins minnow for me... about 95% of every trout I caught came on these lures. This includes a 7+ lb brown and quite a few 15-17 inch rainbows. All were caught in rivers/streams.

I was a rooster tail fan for a long time but there's something about the yo zuris that seems irresistible... Plus I'm impatient as all hell when it comes to soaking bait or drifting eggs etc...

whenever I try to bounce eggs along the bottom I get snagged, tips anyone? and does anyone try using flies with spinning gear? I plan on trying some wooly buggers under a few split shots to keep it near the bottom after opening day, I've heard it can be killer

I've had a couple nice rainbows on black weighted woolys this past November on the Pequest. No split shot... just floated through so rapids into a pool. They wouldnt commit to anything that day. Gave the ol' wooly a whirl and whammo! Had to be quick with the hook set as they didnt hold on long. A bit of an adjustment with spinning gear. See below...

To avoid snags use a little less weight so that it is just ticking the bottom as it drifts down stream. Also try to avoid slack so you are in constant contact with the weight/bait so you can give it a small flick to keep it drifting if if gets hung up.

Re: GO TO for Trout................

1/16 oz Roostertail. Silver blades, Copper blades, Glow in the dark blades.... I just ordered some all-black ones.

It's what I always go to, not necessarily what I always catch them on, and I don't always catch them but I do go to them with those. I don't know what I just said there but anyway it's the Roostertail.

If I absolutely have to catch a trout, I want a tin of nightcrawlers with me.
