Alabama Rig 5-bait system
Has anyone fished this with success in FW here in NJ. Got one for Christmas.
This is a central "jig head" with 5 wire leaders that one can snap a jig head carrying a plastic bait...a schooling bait ball so to speak Looks like it could be effective, but we all have got lures that "caught our eye" and not caught fish. I think that YUM has a similar product called "bait school technology" Anyone tired this type of fishing here in NJ? |
Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
I have and caught fish with it. Make sure you get a Alabama rod or something stiff to keep hurling that bastard. You're arms will be sore after a day of that, that's for sure.

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
After decades of trolling umbrellas for stripers and blues, I am looking forward to trolling them behind the yak this year in fresh water.

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
Ive used quite a few diff ones. The regular 4-5 wire w lead heads work ok, but Ive mainly used them trolling on the downriggers for stripers suspended at the thermocline. For casting I found a guy who custom makes them and they are sort of a mini setup, a little smaller and lighter and each of the 4 wires has an indent that holds a spinner halfway down, that one works great for everything esp smallies and pike/pickeral. I usually rig w a keitech or smaller swimbait w lightest jighead I have. I also have the same one in a 3 wire thats great too, they have no center wire so no tangles and u can cast it fine w a MH action rod and not kill ur arms

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
Concept is appealing. Multiple hooks with 5 baits. Pass it through schooling Bass feeding on similar sized bait. Wonder how many multiple hook ups have been experienced, 1,2,3,4,5? My first thought was initially small blues or even snappers in the fall. Given that it is marketed as a FW bait, just wanted to feel the waters on experience here. Will give it a try in both FW and the salt if conditions are right. Not sure if I want to try and land 5 X 12 lb blues on this rig.

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
just remember guys, that the maximum number of barbs you can use while freshwater fishing in NJ is 9 (per rod). so one of those alabama rigs with all treble hooks would not be legal.

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
yeah with single hooks it is fine. let us know how you do. i never bought one because it's bad enough losing a $4 panther martin, i think i would cry if i snagged one of those $30 alabama rigs on something

Re: Alabama Rig 5-bait system
I second that, With the price of lures today you'll go broke quick!!!I bought a strikeking sexy shad ( cost 15.00) and on the third or fouth cast hung it WAY up in the trees at a lake, wanted to cry! i CANT justify buying certain lures due to their price, it's getting out of hand. Even plastics are pushing seven to ten a bag anymore. I make alot of my own plastics now and like to fish live bait alot more now due to the expense of lures today. Bought one myself last year and have yet to break it out!!!!LOL Add up the cost of the braid, rod, and lures and you got a small fortune invested. I better catcha boatload of fish on the one i got before i take out a second mortgage!!!!! Knowing the way things work for me won't be too many casts before it's hung and I'm done!!!!!!
