Re: ice fishing flasher help?
I too have been thinking about ice fishing and if there will be enough ice this year to get out. After reading your post I did a quick search and this youtube video seemed helpful enough.

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
The vex is good, and so are the marcum and hummingbird flashers. If you haven't used a flasher before the Showdown is the easiest to read. It's a vertical screen that shows the depth, bottom and marks your jig, a fish, or anything else in the water column as a line. It even reads through clear ice if you put a little water on the ice. I'm sure you can watch videos of every flasher I mentioned on YouTube

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
I have a portable Humminbird sonar that has a flasher mode and two years ago I bought the ice transducer for it and gave it a shot. It was actually pretty cool and definitely helped me catch a few more fish. They are ridiculously easy to read once you realize what the bars represent. You can watch your jig go up and down and when you see another big set of bars "approach" and then "connect" with your jig...set the hook. I was fishing for pickerel up the in gap and was watching the big sets of bars creep up on my jig on the unit and I would set the hook every time they met. I never felt the hits, but I hooked every fish.

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
Definitely a must have. I can't wait for ice season. It has to come and I hope it sticks around into March. Just went through my jigs the other day. Really fired up just to get out there. TIGHT LINES!!!

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
If it's on a sunday i'm definetly in!!!! Starting to get a severe case of cabin fever already and just didn't fish the last two weeks! Don't know what the hell I'm gonna do when it really sets in. Haven't been on the ice in a long time but the auger is ready to go! Been going thru my stuff for the ice and for next year already Uggggg! Look forward to meeting some more of You Guys hopefully SOON or the wife's gonna strangle me! LOL Got an old hummingbird portable hoping to try out this year as well not a flasher it's a fish finder so we'll see how it works out. Main thing i guess is bottom depth and if you see some fishies I guess it's all good.

Ugh finer lines. Fish will be noted in a band between bottom & top, larger bands indicate bigger fish , while a series of thin bands could be a schoolboy bait etc. Drop offs will show as a series of vertical bands for the length of thedrop. Flashers are excellent shallow water machines & most have that portability factor for esse of use! |
Re: ice fishing flasher help?

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
Ok Saxmatt and Mikey, Ill set up a thread within a week or so. We need to have a safe zone for ice anglers that are a little scared of thin ice. Im pretty sure the majority of HARD WATER anglers on this site will agree that 6 inches of safe ice is sufficient. Hopefully we'll have that 6 inches in the beginning of January. What day is better for you guys, saturday or sunday? Its going to be a good time with some fish caught. Lets get em fellas. TIGHT LINES!!!

Re: ice fishing flasher help?
6 inches? we'll be waiting til february lol..... 3-4 is all you need we may not get 6 if it doesnt stay cold for long enough in between. Im def in but I wouldnt bother on budd lake, its cleaned out from what I hear. Monksville u got a chance for some eyes amongst other things. Shallow lakes freeze up first usually theres alot of them around
