Musky Help!!!
 

Hey gang, Ive caught every fish this state has to offer up. All shapes and sizes. 1 species I do have a hard time with is the elusive MUSKELLUNGE. I see these fish on almost every trip I go on, they jump next to my boat, They jump up out of the water for blackbirds at LH. I FASTEDDIE29 have never caught a keeper size MUSKY. Ive caught maybe 50 Musky over the past 11 years but they are always short and between 30-36 inches. I would like to catch a MONSTER MUSKY for a change. Can I get a little help fellas? I have some money to spend on some new lures or custom lures. What is your favorite lure for trolling or casting? What is your favorite fall MUSKY lure? A little help/ advice fellas. you've caught snake heads? I've yet to pop my musky cherry but when it's my turn I'm going with the big lures/big fish theory, probably starting with the mepps musky killer.

Ive caught everything in this state that Ive wanted to catch. I need a KEEPER MUSKY 40+inches!!!:D

Eddie,

Echo Lake from now until end of Oct. is your best bet.....Try throwing Chartreuse Spinnerbaits w/ trailer hook at shoreline and weed edges...You will catch a Muskie.......I usually get them by accident while bass fishing......Make sure you have a 15-20 pound leader(even though I got lucky and lamnded a 22 pounder on 8 pound test mono last year!!).......But then again, I was lucky I got him in on light line........

I've only caught 1 musky in my fishing "career", and that was by pure dumb luck, lol. Well, the hook up anyway. I'd like to think landing it was an example of skilled angling. Anyway, don't think I'd be much help, but Good Luck!!!! Let us know how it goes!!!!

Go on YouTube and check out Larry Dahlberg's muskie videos. He's one of the best muskie fisherman and lure makers around. You'll learn a lot from watching his shows.

Let me tell you I have never seen anyone catch more musky than this old man does on greenwood lake with a technique called spoonplugging. I believe muskynut just started using them recently and its paying off. I'm not a musky guy but I have caught them trolling and jogging for walleye, def. A great time on 8 lb test. Anyway he has videos on YouTube showing the technique and the fish he catches, you will be sure to run into him on greenwood lake in the fall he's there a lot, nice guy just call him over and he will tell you all you want to know about spoonplugging. If I was targeting musky this is def. The route I would go.

Funny you mention those videos of that guy spoonplugging. Just happened to come across that today. The guy seems to know what hes doing. In one video he caught 6 muskies and fish I would consider huge, he was calling small. Seems to be quite the character too haha

Im more of a Pike expert but my advice for MUSKY is to throw big baits for the bigger MUSKY... The bigger Musky will only hit things that are worth their time and energy which means throw bigger baits....

Thanx fellas. That Greenwood lake dude is a character. Ive watched a few of his videos, he catches some serious MUSKY. I have quite a few Musky lures as it is, maybe its time to add to the arsenal. I havn't been up to Greenwood in 5 years, ill have to give it a shot this fall. TIGHT LINES!

A couple of guys I know use those rubber type segmented troll / cast look alike bait lures!
They mimic bluegills, perch etc life size! However looks like trolling gets the job done in late season , hard blow days gotta be best!!

get a few big plugs like gibbs or dannys and troll real slow over weed beds and around points.you want that plug just under the water so it makes a wake.troll them back away from the boat.i like dark colors dark days light color light days.a nice slow wobble drives them nuts

Unless you're a troller, which I am not, a big jerkbait is tough to beat in the fall. Mag and SuperMag Bulldawgs are classic fish-catchers, just make sure you have the gear for tossing HEAVY lures. I personally prefer gliders with soft-tails that produce a sub-surface "walk the dog." That's what these guys ate in water temperatures below 40 degrees.

Try mountain lake in liberty, my son and his friend got 7 hits and landed 5 last week on size 5 mepps along the weed lines. The fish were between 8 and 13 lbs.

Are you referring to Mountain Lake just north of route 46 off of 618? Isn't that private?

Thanx fellas. If I dont get my KEEPER MUSKY this year, I might flip out. I took a little inventory of my lures today. I have a couple very large Creek Chubb lures, A couple Believer lures, assorted large Super Shad Raps, a couple Bulldawgs in various colors and of course I have a bunch of 9-10 inch Bombers, Rapalas etc. Im gonna spend another 150-200 bucks on lures like right now just to make sure I have everything I think I may need. Any other info is greatly appreciated. Thanks again fellas.

Nice fish Gatto. What are they 42-43"? Bucktails are great in the summer, but when water temperatures start dropping, I'd stick with a slower moving bait with a big profile. I'd also encourage anyone who wants to learn more about muskies and conserving the fishery to come to the Muskies Inc. 22 meetings the last Tuesday of every month at the Arrowhead Lake Lodge in Denville. Information can be found on mi22.com or by PM'ing me. It's a really great group of brand new and seasoned musky anglers and can seriously cut down the learning curve to consistently catch these elusive fish.

AWESOME fish Gatto and Mr. ONTHELAKE. Mark good to see you on here again. Thank you. Ill be starting my quest once this disgusting summer weather is out of here. Probably be out on Hopac most of the time and Greenwood once in a while. I have the kayak too for the other lakes but I dont think catching a big Musky in the yak would go to well. Also have a canoe now as well. Anybody wants to fish for Musky with me, PM me. Lets get at em!!!

First fish was 40 even second one was longer then the tape measure we had that day which was 44 inches. I'd say 47-48

You can launch at mountain lake by the casino or on the opposite side of the lake by the restaurant that is closed. shotre access is limited.

Thanks Birddog. Ive ice fished ML a bunch of times in the past, the casino is usually where we walk on the ice. I fish with Craig a few times, he lives right there on the lake. Hes caught quite a few Skis threw the ice there. I havn't seen him in a while, lack of ice last year. Also a dude I believe his name is Jim, always decked out in camo gear and brings his dog with him. You gotta know these 2 ice anglers. They fish Budd lake and ML all the time.
