Oxford Furnace Musky
I had a sneaking suspicion that I could get a musky to bite at the Furnace on the new moon....and I was right. Got on the lake at 9am and landed a true strain within 90 minutes. I didn't get a measure, but I'm guestimating at 36 inches. Let me know if anyone thinks otherwise. They just started tossing true strains in here in 2008, so these fish are growing fast. This guy hit a 6 1/2-inch, perch-colored jerkbait in 5-feet of water off a drop-off into 10 over in a weedbed. Water temp was 37 degrees. Not a monster, but a good fish and I say Goddamn, IT'S ONLY FEBRUARY!!!!

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
One of my favorite lakes to fish

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
Indeed Herring. I hope you don't hate me for blowing up your spot. The way I see it, anyone looking for musky knows where they are and anyone not looking for musky is going to get so frustrated with trying to catch one that they're not going to be fishing there that long anyway. The Furnace is a tough nut to crack and 99% of the people who fish there walk away with there tail between their legs scratching their heads.

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
nice !! we used to get them early in Mountain lake too but they were really legarthic, and actualy hit slow moving jig and pigs the best

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
And Hammer, I was working the Phantom painfully slow. It's a glide bait, but it doesn't sink very fast. If you just give it occasional twitches, it darts and hangs in the water column and makes a perfect target. Great coldwater bait.

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
That was new one for me too man. Actually, most of the new spots I've fished over the last year were told to me because I answered people's questions about what I was doing and where I was doing it. There's a lot of stuff I don't post to the world, but I'm not gonna be a d-bag if someone asks me something in private. Furnace is a different story. I can't PAY people to go there because the fishing is so tough. Just because you tell someone where to catch a musky, there's a 1% percent chance they can actually go get one, esp if they don't know what they're doing. Most give-up and don't have the stomach for it, which is why there are a lot more trout fishermen than musky fishermen in this state.

Sharing his knowledge and keeping others interested in the art of fishing this state? I'd say that he's a much truer sportsman than most, actually |

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
I'm not trying to start anything but I never see people on that lake. Out of the 25+ times that I've been there ( Saturdays only) I probably saw about 6 other boats total. But I do agree that you can't spot burn a musky lake in NJ.

Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
Hey Mark,
nice fish brother. how many days are you up to now? can i have a list of every body of water you fished? i need you to burn more spots lol. nice job and keep your streak alive. |
Re: Oxford Furnace Musky
Great fish Mark! You might need to change your name to "muskyonthelake" :D Hey don't tell anyone there is a river with BIG fish...it is the border of NJ and PA. You don't need any skill to catch these fish they just jump on anything ya throw at them.
