Greenwood Lake 12/12-Musky and Walleye
Jrock and Redi took me out to the show me the ropes on Greenwood today and it wound up being a memorable day. I caught what was most likely my first legal musky, although I can't be 100-percent sure b/c I was more concerned about letting him go than getting an accurate measurement. We launched from Willow Point Marina in the dark and it was COLD. They've lowered the lake, and this may be one of the last places to launch. After two quiet hours, I broke the ice with a sunfish on a Binsky:rolleyes: . Shortly after, Jay and Redi had back to back 3ish pound walleyes and we picked away at some perch, another small walleye and a couple lost walleye. We were on the big submerged island up in the north end and Jay was about to make a move when I tossed a lure behind the boat to troll. Within 20 seconds my rod was bent and I knew it was no snag. It came to the boat pretty easily then went ballistic. Dove under the boat and jumped clear out of the water behind my back on the other side. I can't believe he didn't get tangled in the motor, but he was landed after a spirited fight, photographed and released with lots of energy left in him. Didn't even need to revive him. I had to head off the lake early, but Jay called and said they hooked two more while jigging that both got off. What a day.

Now that is a nice fish.. I read your blog everyday- huge difference between that monster and the catfish/panfish from your local ponds. Glad to hear your persistence paid off. Congrats again.

Incredible that something that size would hit something that small

Re: Greenwood Lake 12/12-Musky and Walleye
I lost a nice musky that day on a small gotcha plug and redi lost a nice one on a small crank bait. The musky were really active that day considering we hooked three while fishing for walleye. Greenwood lake has produced a lot of fish for me in the past two months. I have caught walleye on ten consecutive trips out there with 7 8 9 10 fish caught a day with musky mixed in as well. I recommend getting a navionics app. for your phone for about 10-15 dollars a little much but WELL worth it or at least a topo map with the depths on it. Fish the submerged humps in the northeast corner or the submerged island in the middle of the lake in about 30 foot of water. Blade baits have been working best with jigging raps and gotcha plugs right behind them. You can launch from willow point marina.

As per Greenwood, I'm hoping to get out there before the ice. My girlfriend lived walking distance from there for about a year, yet I only fished it once. Stupid Monksville took control of my brain instead lol. |

Monksville does tend to do that...big fish and lots of skunked days, hence the term "skunksville" but after you get a chance to see the size of the fish that live in there, it can get kind of addicting.... |
Re: Greenwood Lake 12/12-Musky and Walleye
Mark, they call muskies the "fish of 10,000 casts", it appears that day you guys whittled down the pattern by about 9,900...;)
Beutiful fish, great release, great story and pics....:) |
Re: Greenwood Lake 12/12-Musky and Walleye
Sidewinder, people generally don't eat muskies...they taste somewhat like pike, and with the y'-bones are a real PITA to eat and tedious,. unless ya deep fry em up in scalding oil...that's one of the reasons most folks C&R them, coupled with the fact that NJ has a great trophy fishery for them and guys that fish for them a lot want to keep it that way...google MuskiesInc for more info.

What a beautiful fish and a remarkable predator.
You should be proud of your catch and I hope it leaves you with many great memories of the moment. Thank you for releasing this beautiful animal to perhaps be enjoyed by another fisherman or by you again! -Jeff Loy P.S. Hi Jay & Redi! |
