Did this so called PROFESINAL ever learn how to set a drag? Was he harnessed to the rod? ? ? ?

I have seen this happen before and the FISHERMAN had the SMARTS to release the drag, get back in the boat with the rod and land the fish....

This guy is a SHMUCK if my Hebrew is correct.

1. This incident happened about fifteen to twenty years ago, you can google to get the actual date.
2. The gentleman in question was a world class angler with many, many large marlin released, including granders. He was on the board of the IGFA, fishbox to call him names or think he didn't know what he was doing, only shows your lack of knowlege. Your spelling of "PROFESINAL" can use some work too.

Wow I guess all the experts have spoken. What don't you get? Several hundred pounds of angry fish, heavy line tip wrapped, angler strapped in equals what you saw. It happens sometimes. Backing down the drag in that situation won't do diddley. Stay at home in your easy chairs where it's safe and you can critisize others on the internet. The guy was far far far from a beginner.

I think sometimes people are to quick to point fingers and second guess, without the experience or knowlege to back up their opinions. I was busy before and really couldn't provide details, I have some time now.The dunking incident occured in 1996. This man was a giant in the sportfishing world, he was the first individual to catch two grander blue marlin, 1141 lbs. and then three days later 1038 lbs. He held 15 light tackle world records, (fishbox and problemfisherman--how many do you have??), he held the record for most giant bluefin tuna caught in one day- 73, He was named to the IGFA Hall of Fame and was an IGFA Trustee. He passed away August 4th, age 79. I met him once, you two need to know more about your hobby before you pass judgement on others.

Looks to me like he saw it was wrapped on the tip and tried to unwrap it and when he could not reach it was in the process of unhooking the reel from the harness when he was pulled over. Not much he could have done there. It's amazing he was able to get back in the boat with the rod. I think the only way to avoid that would be to use a safety line attaching the angler to the boat, which I believe is against IGFA rules.

That was one big marlin!! I really don't know who Stewart Campbell is since I'm not a big game guy, but reading his accomplishments certainly validates him being a real pro. This goes to show that stuff can happen even to the best of us when the unforeseen happens wayyyy too fast!

i believe safety lines(rod or harness) are within IGFA rules as long as it is not used to aid the fight . I bot an angler mate safety harness for my young son and confirmed it with the igfa at the time.

If my memory serves me well not only was Stewart Campbell a great marlin angler but a local Capt use to run his boat the Grander out of Montauk I believe. Rich Barrett son of Pete Barrett editor of NJ Fisherman did for many years. They were a great team for many seasons & caught more Marlin in one day than many on this board will ever see. I'm not sure why this episiode is so significant " now" since I'm sure it happened many years ago. To critize an angler of his stature is beyond me.

Accidents can happen to the most experienced captains out there and just goes to show you how dangerous this sport that we love can be.

To call someone names when the exact same thing could happen to you, if you ever had the chance to be in that situation, just goes to show your own character. It also demonstrates your lack of understanding of what can happen even if you are doing everything correctly.

I believe Campbell might have been a Fl angler ( not sure) with B. Garnsey as his Capt! Anyhow I met him down that way many moons ago , certainly a very dedicated Marlin angler that expierenced what could have been a tragic mishap!

big game fishing is a team sport,that day the team was alittle off.its not the first time that has happend and i'm sure that mistakes will happen again.it is a great reminder that those fish as all large game fish require respect and safty should always be first.

The thing that struck me most in the video was how he went over like a sack of potatoes

He probably fought that fish for some time, being they were at the leader, yet that marlin with one shot, tossed that guy in like it was nothing.

I see the mate hand lining the fish for a tag or what ever.
Then I see the "FISHERMAN" unwrap the line from the eye closest to him.
It seems to be clear at that time.

AS FOR SPELLING I corrected yours for you.
I have never seen anyone get knocked for spelling.

I have fished for around 47 years, numerous Sharks and Tuna up to 747 pounds here in NJ.
I made a sound system to attract sharks out of the old two way speakers that used to be used on desks. I waterproofed them and hooked them up to a tape player and played many kinds of music to the fish until we found out what worked best.

I have no world records. Do you?

I like to see pictures and stories like this posted so a dialog will be started to make people think about what they would do.

Whats with all the respect crap? We saw a video, i didnt know him, never got the chance, dont really even know who he is all that well, you wanna call him a moron, idiot, wimp, loser, WHO CARES.. opinions are just that, opinions..

I bet there are some captains on here who have seen less fish and smaller fish including marlin then some of us "easy chair" people on the site.

Him getting pulled over was no fault of his own, and because someone calls him an idiot or whatever rich, give me a break, they are not bashing him or his credentials..

Relax yourself ladies.. He hooked a big marlin and got pulled over the side of the boat, he lived through it. Call him what you want, who CARES!!!!!!!!!
