Just curious, isn't seabass supposably opening soon?

Re: Seabass
Inshore seabass is open now. Only trouble is there are no seabass inshore.

Re: Seabass
At the last NJ Marine Fisheries Council meeting, they set a season opening start date of 5/22 for state waters.

(February 2, 2010) Move to recommend to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) the 2010 black sea bass recreational measures be set at 12.5” minimum size limit, 25 possession limit, and a season of May 22 – Sept 12 contingent on NMFS increasing the TAL for black sea bass. If the recommendation is adopted by NMFS the states would adopt those same measures approved by NMFS for the 2010 fishery. Motion by made Mr. Munden and seconded by Mr. Augustine. Motion carries. The federal closure is technically over in early April, but the proposed rule is expected shortly for the 2010 season. Adam is referring to the NJMFC meeting that was held in Toms River this past March 4th. |
Re: Seabass
Thanks for the heads up CaptTB.

Re: Seabass
From what I checked out on the internet this is only a proposal. If you catch a 12 1/2 seabass within 3 miles today you can keep it. Right or wrong?

Re: Seabass
out of all the closures to me the sea bass hurt the most. It is my favorite kind of fishing and there was no reason for 6 month closure. Im sure the people down south feel the same about grouper and red snapper.

We sure do. On the bright side however, I am headed out to fill the boat with seabass early this next week. :D |
Re: Seabass
Is the federal seabass open. Also, I had an idea. Someone who knows the offshore seabass wrecks and is not a charter or party boat guy might be able to help. I have heard rumors that down south, around Atlantic City, a couple of guys were heading to a couple of wrecks 50-70 miles offshore and pounding giant seabass on butterfly jigs. I think an exploratory trip would be a good idea. Only if a person had a great knowledge about these wrecks and had a boat capable of making the run would this be possible. Now that's just an idea. I will post details in a couple of months when the season is close to opening.

After reading your past post and the great bottom fishing that you have in NC I feel like jumping into my car and heading south to get into those seabass. Offshore seabass trips out of NJ was one of my favorite things to do over the winter. I use to bring my dad on some of those trips as that is one of his favorite fish to catch. Heading down to MD to tog fish for 2 days on 4/2 and 4/3. Maybe I should extend my trip and head further south to mix it up with some nice seabass MVP |

They are fishing the same rock piles all the charter and party boats fish. They are right offshore and kilsong used to make about a trip or two a week out there jigging the snot out of them.. If they open it up soon it would be a good shot, another month or so those fish should be heading inshore a little and then right off the beach in a few months! |
Re: Seabass
I use to do those trips all the time with both Kil Song and Mike Jung from Peace Token. End of November we would head out with Jeff on the voyager. In december I would head out with the Voyager and the Jamacia. Once January and Febuary came around I would head south out of Wildwood Crest and would jig them at the Baltimore Rocks. I miss those days. Once June comes around I will be heading out with fellow member Fishguts to target inshore seabass out of Barnegat. With very little pressure this winter the inshore bite is going to be insane with great #'s and better quality.

Re: Seabass
I heard this during the summer. I knew for a long time they had a winter offshore seabass fishery but on rockpiles with jigs instead of wrecks with bait. I was thinking maybe the real jumbos stay on the offshore wrecks. Anyway, when is this year's seabass season:confused: . Isn't it June and September.

Re: Seabass
Please GO HERE for the updated 2010 NJ Recreational Regulations
As I said earlier, the states approved a May 22 to Sept 12 season. Unless or until the feds come out with something different expect the regs for Sea Bass to remain the same. Once we get actual landings numbers from wave 5 (if ever) and the feds publish their proposed rule we will have a better idea of what changes may come. |
