Dogfish Eating Cod
Something many have thought for years now...
https://www.capecodtimes.com/story/n...3b9BG_gEh5m18Y Was up in Gloucester a few years back Haddock fishing and the Dogs were so thick we'd have to get the bait out of the water and stop fishing for 20 mins at a clip... Drop back in and catch some Haddock and 10 mins later we'd have to stop fishing again. You'd reel them up and there was 10 others following. Seems like you can't get past these Dogfish to get at the Sea Bass and Tog in our area too.. Meanwhile people are talking about Tog Biomass being down and imposing stricter regulations. Maybe they should be looking at the Dogfish populations and the effect they have on Tog.. Thoughts, opinions?? Seems like you can hardly drop anything, jigs, bait etc and not be invaded by them... |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
How do you cook the dogfish? :D
|
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Marinated in Italian dressing and throw it on the grill

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Commercial guys have been catching crazy numbers of dogfish here this fall . And it hasn’t even put a dent in them .
|
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
How about donating the dogfish to food banks and such?

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
They are everywhere even in the bay off of Keansburg. Is it true that they are used for fish & chips meals or is that just a urban legend? If so let the commercial guys catch them up and sell them! To me they are uneatable but they do use them down south jersey for fluke bait strips.

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
You are correct about their numbers. It didn’t matter if you dropped a jig to the bottom or reeled it through the water column. The doggies were on it. I caught one while reeling in a jig that wasn’t more than 10 feet down. We had one that was approaching 4’ in length. The only thing we never caught them on was an umbrella rig.
The market price has to be right for the commercial guys to harvest them. Lobster trap bait? Maybe. Again, if the price is right. Fish and chips? If that’s the case, you can feed the world. |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
They're skin pissers. I hear smooth doggies are the ones served as cape shark. I had it once, perfectly cleaned, bled, iced down and brined for 24 hours, dried, battered and deep fried. The taste was very unpleasant.
Spinys are vile. Sometimes they're so thick off Montauk we gun the boat thru them and it's a blood bath from so many getting chopped in the props. Slice the bellies and more come running to eat the innards. Theyll eat anything. The only thing weve ever used them for is tilefish bait. Soaked the strips in clam juices or gulp alive juice. Stays on the hook forever. Like shoe leather |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
We caught some “pups” while sea bass fishing this spring. They were just born (live bearers) and were extremely small. And the beat goes on. They have no predators and they don’t appear to have a market value. They evidently don’t taste good. If they did, they would appear in fish markets and on restaurant menus. When they start eating cod and haddock, squid and crustaceans, maybe they will start showing up as floaters behind the draggers.

Spiny dogfish are AKA "Cape Shark"
https://capecodfishermen.org/images/...eb_version.pdf Had some in Providence a year or so ago and it was rather good. Just haven't gotten up the nerve to try to clean and cook some of the ones I catch jigging for bass. |

Caught, tagged and released two on a metal Wednesday evening from a jetty.

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Kill 'em and feed them to the crabs.

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
I don't understand why this is news. Take humans out of it and there is a balanced relationship between dogfish and cod (or whatever else they prey on). Add humans and now you have us taking out a large number of the dogfishes' prey, but not taking out any dogfish. Of course dogfish numbers are going to rise while cod numbers are going to decline. So only two things can be done. Stop catching so many cod or start catching more dogfish.

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
We caught a whole bunch of dogfish this year while fluking and bottom fishing for sea bass. Way too many.

An aluminum baseball bat to the head. Repeat as necessary.

The cookbook "The Joy of Cooking" has a Fish & Chips recipe and recommends using dogfish. It's a delicious recipe.
Don't need to bleed. Just wack em on the head to stop the squirming and filet them right after catching. Put in a bag on ice. No problem leaving the skin on and slicing it off at the end of the day on the water. Cut off the belly flaps too. |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Reminds me of the time I was out on a party boat, and I had an absolute lunatic fishing next to me. The doggies were thick, and he was getting pissed. Finally, he snapped. With every doggie that came up, he would pull out his knife, and start stabbing it in the head, while yelling “die bastard die”. Then toss the bleeding fish back in the water.
Needless to say, he got a little extra space at the rail from me. |

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
All about the Russian necklace!! If I'm wreck fishing and they get bad I just stop fishing for a few minutes and they normally go away for awhile.

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Honest question..... The Chinese decimate sharks world wide, mostly for their fins... I know that Dogfish are small sharks, but why wouldn't their fins be just as good for making a tasteless ,gelatinous soup?
We could have them cleaned out within a few months in the NY Bight, if commercials can get a good price from the Communists for them.. I am sure the Belford Fleet would mop em up in short order if given half a chance.. Or are they still under ""endangered species"" protection?.......bob |

So the stock biomass is in decline? Commercials still get 20 + million pounds a year and yet they are still around in huge numbers. |

This is probably just a cyclical thing and is more likely the result of an INCREASE of some particular food source, such as porgy or other smaller fish. |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
They have moved from shark fins on to bat heads these days. LMAO

Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Doggies I’m sure are eating more then cod ! No matter if you fish up north in NE or any place in between you can expierence being overwhelmed by doggies .
Recently I was on a Tog trip up north and they would grab your crabs as fast as you got them to the bottom ! I’m no scientist but who’s ever in charge of this charade doesn’t have a clue ! Not much new here !! |
Re: Dogfish Eating Cod
Guys please, this an endangered species, kindly use circle hooks for their safety!
