Beats me. Like NOT targeting wahoo. Pure dumb luck finding someone who advertises that in north NJ.

King mackerel is an incidental catch in NJ and it’s highly doubtful that any boat anywhere in NJ will advertise that gather target them.

As a side note, NJ has been seeing more and more Spanish Mackerel caught each summer but again I don’t think you’ll see any boats specifically targeting them.

They came pretty far north last year, and boats out of Cape Cod caught them.. However, it has been and always will be a crap shoot .. they might not show at all, and even if they do I am not sure many captains will run out for them exclusively.. What I would do is talk online to some of the better captains that catch a lot of pelagic/offshore/ exotic game fish each year, and keep in touch .. You would probably get a few that would try and set you up if and when there is a chance to catch a King along with other species.. Problem is, by the time they know for sure if they are around in catchable numbers, you might find the better captains booked solid for the season .. I would email some good charter captains and get the dialog started.. Better yet, North Carolina has a ton of charter boats that target Kings.. Several Virginia boats target them as well, and they have a better shot at getting you into one than a NJ boat IMHO... bob

tough to target them up here as many above have stated they are purely an incidental catch... water just doesn't get consistently warm enough to sustain that fishery for us - which is unfortunate because they'd be a great species to catch and target!

That from a guy thats in the business, and knows the score.

OP is from south Jersey.. He could certainly make the drive down to Virginia.. Several charter captains there target Kings in summer/fall,,
Doesn't mean they catch one every trip I imagine, but they are a lot more commonly caught there than in NJ/NY... bob

I targeted them one summer in 2005 or 2006 with success every day I tried off Ocean City/Longport area. I slowed trolled peanut bunker and caught fish that ranged from 5 to 15 pounds. Mahi bit too and brown sharks and even big blues. They can be targeted. But to know whether it's going to be a good year for them, before they actually show.....that's hard to say. You'd have to book someone and hope and be prepared for catching other species doing that tactic.
