Modern Fishing Act HR 200 Needs Your Support
As you all know, our Marine Fishing Regulations which are governed by the Federal Magnuson Stevens Act, are the root of the issues we face locally. The most recent example being Sea Bass...
We've been under highly restrictive regulations over the past few years to protect and improve the Sea Bass stocks. Due to our sacrifices the Sea Bass stocks have been fully rebuilt. You'd expect more liberal regulations, yet we are staring down the barrel of more restrictions. This due in large part to the failures and inflexibility of Magunson Stevens Act and it needs to change.. HR 200 - The Modern Fishing Act seeks to make improvements to the Fisheries Management Laws and Systems which have failed us and will continue to fail unless we get it passed. Here is where you come in.... Right now HR 200 has passed out of committee and needs to go to the floor for a vote... The problem is we need to put some pressure on our local representatives to encourage Speaker Ryan to post it for a vote. It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican, if you live in PA, NY, NJ or Montana. If you fish and are tired of the Marine Fisheries Management tread mill we're on you need to act now... So for all of you who would like to get involved, go to this site - https://www.house.gov/, type in your zip code and under the photo or your representative, click on the the email icon - Fill out the form and choose "Sports and Recreation" as the issue your email relates to - Use HR 200 in the subject line - In the comments section ask your representative to encourage Speaker Ryan to post HR 200 for a vote. Your comments might go something like this. As a constituent of your district and an avid fishermen looking for improvements to Marine Fisheries Management policies, I respectfully request your support to encourage Speaker Ryan to post the HR 200 Modern Fishing act for a vote. Please pass this along to your fishing friends, fishing groups, facebook groups etc... You can copy and paste this link http://www.njfishing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102479 or use the sharing buttons you see on the left side of this page. Let's not sit on the sidelines and watch, we all need to get involved!! Thanks for the support everyone... Let's do this!! |

WOW! I am glad to see all the recreational fishermen and charter boat Captains passing this around already? (Sarcastic)
Here is a noble challenge. Lets see how many of us respond to this link and contact the officials who can actually make a positive change. If you do just post "Done." We do have the numbers to make a change for the better, but if you do nothing now don't complain later. |

Dear Mr. Sanborn, Thank you for contacting me regarding the “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act,” also known as H.R. 200. This legislation was introduced by Rep. Don Young of Alaska on January 3, 2017 and referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. If enacted, this legislation would change requirements for the fishery management plans for overfished fisheries and alter catch limit requirements by authorizing Regional Fishery Management Councils to consider changes in an ecosystem and the economic needs of the fishing communities when establishing the limits. As you may know, I will not have the opportunity to vote on this bill until it is approved by the relevant committee. However, I will certainly take your views into consideration should this legislation come to a vote before the U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts on this issue. If you’d like to stay updated on my work in Congress, I’d encourage you to sign up for my newsletter by clicking here. You can also visit my website, Facebook page, and Twitter profile for more information. For any questions, concerns, or thoughts, please feel free to call my office at 202-225-4765. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely, Tom MacArthur Member of Congress |

Gerry sent this to Rep Frelinghuysen. I know this will stir the pot but so be it. The fact there's less than a dozen replies to Gerry's post (which I assume means there's about that many who have reached out to their local representatives) is disheartening. If people are sincere about change and having their voice heard and our opinions matter (whether our representatives listen or not) it doesn't get any easier than this. If we don't, we've already lost. How a post like this doesn't blow up is mind-boggling.

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the Modern Fish Act (included in H.R. 200) on Tuesday, June 26, 2018. The U.S. Senate is currently considering the Modern Fish Act (S. 1520).
It is imperative that you contact your Member of Congress today and strongly urge them to support the Modern Fish Act. The Modern Fish Act (included in H.R. 200/S.1520) will make critically important changes to federal fishing regulations, including several key provisions contained in both bill that are supported by a broad coalition of recreational fishing and boating organizations: • Allows for recreational fisheries to be managed using more appropriate management tools • Modifies the annual catch limit requirement to allow for more adaptive approaches • Requires managers in the southeastern U.S. to perform long-overdue examinations of fishery allocation, based on modern criteria • Limits the spread of catch share programs that have negatively impacted anglers and fishing communities • Promotes consideration of new data collection methods that could improve fisheries management and conservation • Ensures exempted fishing permits help fisheries management and conservation - rather than the status quo which can hinder both Please urge your Member of Congress to support the Modern Fish Act.
