Beached Boat

What was the story about the boat that was on the beach at the point of the Hook on Saturday morning. It was bow out when I saw it on our way out but it was gone by the afternoon on our return. I hope everyone was okay. That is a dangerous area since the SH Channel with its ocean going tankers and tugs and barges comes so close to the beach right there.

Looks like Boat U.S. tow boat was attempting to pull the boat off the beach in that pic?

They were probably out fishing at night and misread the beach. Easy to do in that area... Charts are way off, especially after Sandy and the dredging they have done in the area.

Right around the SH #11 can the Hook sticks out way further than the charts or GPS shows.

I think the USCG put an ancillary "11A" buoy there last year to mark it?

Correct. After Sandy the 11 buoy instead of being off the beach was right on the beach... They moved it and put a temporary 11A to make the channel more clear to boaters.

Soon after they dredged the whole area and removed the 11A.

Amazing what Sandy did and the rip in the area is no longer there.

Another problem in that area are the pots in the middle of the channel (Isnt there a law against that ;-).

If you are coming in at night, be sure to hug the red side of SH channel.

Towing that boat out of there while the tide was still out might have been a bigger mistake than running aground. The running gear had to be destroyed! New shafts and props for sure!

I agree that the red side at night is the only way to head in. Cutting the corner at the tip is risky. I thought the buoy that was there last year was one that had come loose from its mooring. It was almost on the beach! They could use it again this year.As close as some of the tankers come to the tip these days, I'm surprised one of them hasn't been hooked by a surfcaster.

Saw the boat at 1:30pm that day... Tide was well on its way in at that point. Stern was above the high tide level.

Anyone think they could have just pressed home on their Gps and drove a straight line to AH or LEONARDO? I'm sure it's been done, esp in foggy conditions.
