Monks Yak Trifecta
Took advantage of the perfect weather last night and took the ride up to old Skunksville. Arrived at the ramp around 8:15pm, tossed the kayak in and got to work. Landed the first eye of the night at 9:10, no measurement but probably just barely a keeper. Good start. Moved around a bit and picked up a thick White Perch literally right on the bank. Had me thinking it was a small Hybrid at first haha :p. Kept on scouting around until I found a weedbed that was filled with spawning Herring. Popping, swirling, you name it. Was very tough staying weedless casting into it, so I changed my approach and it was game on. Set up parallel to this weedbed, casting just far enough out that I wouldn't get hung up. Lots of horny Herring looking to get down with my lure on the retrieve. Pulled 2 nice Walleyes out of the spot, both super aggressive strikes VERY close to the kayak . Both very similar in length with one being noticeably fatter. Figuring I had my first Skunks limit of Walleye by a very early 11pm, I decided to bask my in my glory and call it a night. All fish released. Still can't believe this place is producing for me after years of brutal beatings!

Skunksville? Nah, you probably launched into the wrong reservoir. These things can happen in the dark. . |

Re: Monks Yak Trifecta
Puttin the time in and learning the lake and taking your own knowledge and using it to give the proper presentation certainly pays off handsomely!

Re: Monks Yak Trifecta
If you look closely, it's the same walleye. There are three fish in that lake, a nice walleye, a huge muskie and a 2 lb bass. All photos we see are of those same three fish. I'm scared that one day someone will keep one, or the muskie will eat the other two. There used to be four fish in Monks, but someone kept the trout.
Seriously, nice catch. When I lived on Fayson, I had no problem fishing past midnight and getting up for work the next day. The fact that the ride home was about 6 minutes was nice. Putting the boat back in the driveway took longer than driving there. I have to get the same mindset about going to Monks and other lakes now. |
