Don’t know if this is true but hear the Long liners are doing very well about another 50-80 miles out and we just haven’t had the nice gulf strea eddies or filaments the past years. Last year we had a real nice patch of water and then it left us right after the tropical storm came through and took the fish with it. IMO, you need the right water and the bait for tuna. Sometimes you only get one or the other, sometimes neither. Let’s hope some better water makes it way through.

There are some very experienced capts in this forum and welcome their thoughts on this.

John you hit the nail on the head with the bait. Up in Mass where the commercial pressure has been limited in some areas there is bait. Herring, squid, lots of endangered cod. Where there is bait and less pressure there are fish. Same old sad song, wipe out the Ling and Whiting and tuna no longer stopping in our area. I totally agree with others that it's early but an abundance of bait would sure help matters.

If long liners are just 50 miles more can the Gambler go out there on there 36 or 48 hour trips ?

I believe you would have to look for their special limited load Flemish Cap trips :D

You'd be doubling the travel time,10 to 20 hrs minimum round trip leaving 12 hrs max for fishing on a 36 & on the drift only...not very profitable for anyone even with the additional cost/angler/trip...I'm talking going out past the Hudson, going north or south, add more travel time & less fishing time...not like a 5 day trip on the left coast!!! It's a nice idea if there were more destination options...think you should be be talking a 72-96hr trip...oh, my....

90 miles or so to Hudson and 4.5 to 5 hours with few fish, way out at 20 knots 160 miles is 8 hours each way? Lots of fish ?
If the fish are there ? Why not. I would give up fishing time to go where the fish are.

I would say it
Is a cost of doing business. 90 foot super cruiser! 1st the grounds wherever the grounds maybe. If the fish are not there gotta go to the fish. ! Some bluefish boats used to run up to 25/30 miles.or they fish 1/4 mile off the beach. Take good with the bad

Water in Hudson not looking great at the moment although it seems some slightly warmer stuff could be trickling in from the east. I guess we'll see what happens as the week progresses. There's always deep drop if conditions become more favorable!
