If i'm understanding you correctly. the problem is the pawl and worm shaft in the body of the reel. Disassemble the oscillating block and under there is the pawl that rides in the worm gear. that makes the spool go up and down. In my service I make sure to disassemble and clean this mechanism. Try to post some pics of your problem areas, happy to assist.
