I haven't been out to the canyons in a while but....pilot whales, whales, porpoise, marlin, swordfish, tuna, sharks. The realm of Neptune himself. The awesome sunsets and sunrises. The salty crisp smell of the deep blue. War birds, Navy ships, cargo containers. To me there is no better place to be, no cell phones.
The night breeze, the endless amount of stars. Mahi and squid shooting through the weeds at night lit up in a rainbow of colors. No better place on earth.

Catching a tuna is but a small part of the experience.

I have made about 60 canyon runs over the years maybe a few more. 35/40 trips have been successful in catching. The rest was a nice boat ride ! 1 the ride sucked, got caught coming back in 15/20 footers thank God for that Lydia construction. Seen some ausome stuff out there from giant whale sharks to tiny birds, sunrise to sunset views in every direction. The cost has gotten a little high. I want to say my first trip cost $150. Bacardi runs was 125 or so! Boy times have changed. I have slowed Down a little bit still enjoy that 4-6 hour ride out and boy I never sleep so good.

I was out there! First time ever I didn't feel so good. Didn't even fish the whole time. First time for everything....Didn't get any either..

BUT...I will never quit trying. I'm gonna go if they go. I'll quit when I die.

Yea BC, been there, done that too...sometimes you're the bug, sometimes the windshield, thankfully it's the windshield WAY more...Actually just got back from a Gambler 36hr trip...I'll be reporting on this trip directly...
Oasis...caught my first yellow & bird on the gambler...had some "bug" trips, but many more of the other...How much do you spend on a family vaca? One guy told me tonight that the 3 grand I spend on tuna per year was too much. I asked how much he spends on family vaca---10/12 grand...and I spend too much? Some days they go to the beach, others to the arcade, movies or just stare out the window at the rain...Know someone who took vaca in OBX-they were evacuated after 2 days for a hurricane...It's a crap shoot, yes, but at least you have an excellent chance of a lot of great eating tuna steaks for you, family and friends...just sayin'.....
And you got a chance to see what motha' nature can be like when she's the "nasty lady" waiting for you outside the inlet...

Fishing is supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, why do it? Plenty of other fish to go after.

I am actually glad it isn't easy and we don't come home with fish every time... or there would be even more boats out there and more people with the great stories and pictures like I have earned by spending a lot of $$$ and a lot of time at the rail. I always tell people I have had more bad trips than good but wow were the good ones good. Always a good idea to book 4 trips and maybe get out on 2-3 or all 4 if you are lucky.

I am glad it is not EZ also. Took me until I was 44 to land my first big eye, 41 for my first Swordie. 25 for my first Striper caught my first bluefish at 8 on the Gambler, First Yellowfin with Gary Fagan on the old Mohawk in the "slough" first fluke on the Norma k2. They all was not EZ but earned with $$ and Time!! Would not trade the memories for anything
