I think it depends on where you go. Seeley's pond by me in Berkeley Heights is a total turn off with people crowded around throwing trash all over, lines getting crossed, etc etc. I couldn't stand Holmdel Park either. It's like goldfish in a bowl. If the Trout can't survive in these mud ponds year long then they shouldn't stock them.

don't forget though, that the money from fishing licenses for the guys who fish for trout in those types of swimming pool size ponds goes to buy real trout habitat in new WMAs in other parts of the state. sounds like a good deal to me.

Trout can't survive long term in many of our stocked waters, streams or ponds. In fact, each type of water, even Trout maintenance (or production!!) waters, has a natural carrying capacity... stocking trout beyond the carrying capacity means that the trout will die one way or another... but provides a greater opportunity for us anglers to catch them. As much as you or I may not view local ponds as "proper trout waters" as mentioned it does cause many more anglers to buy licenses, who otherwise would not. It provides opportunities for kids to catch trout when their busy dads are not there. Local tourneys and contests are held on some of those ponds. Definitely not for everybody, but the state tries to provide something for everyone... naturally not everybody is happy about their choices :D

to each his own.

I may chase the stockies (only because it is so close to home), but there are plenty of times that I am catching fish while others are just standing in the river not catching. don't get me wrong, there are times i don't catch either, but they are few and far between. I don't want to sound like an ass, but it is true that it is harder for some folks to get em. I take some pride in being able to go down to the river and outfish almost everyone there, stockies or not.

I guess I understand stocking trout in some waters, but to stock trout in literal mud-holes is just ridiculous and asinine. I understand that trout will not survive in the long term in most waters but to drop trout into 3 or 4 ft deep ponds that are literally just mud is mind boggling and a waste of time, energy and resources.

You should see the stream below Seely's pond, it's inches deep in some spots with a few holes here and there but if we don't get rain soon any trout in there you may as well just grab them with your hands.

I fish with two lb test line, powerbait or lures and a light drag and I think its lots of fun.and I'm a saltwater fisherman. Last year they stocked my lake with 50 breeders,I got 7 all on 2 lb test with lures. From 4 to 5 lbs and that was awesome! I don't like eating them though.

I think that catching trout is fun. But it is not as fascinating as catching bass or pike in the passaic river. One of my goals is to catch a trout in the passaic river in little falls. Now that would be exciting. My friend has caught two in little falls that prob got washed down from another river and I saw one guy catch a nice brown in a report. Plus there would be no one standing right next to you in waders like most of the trout streams in NJ. It would be a nice accomplishment.
