(Surprising thing is some of the pickerel were out in 30 feet of water where I believed no weeds existed, but then again, water is so clear, maybe some residual weeds were at bottom.)

Yes that lake you talking about they tend to suspend in that deep water very common there.
Same way you fish for trout couple feet under the ice, and don’t forget there’s rainbows so don’t be afraid to try some powerbait on one or two maybe |
