I responded to you! I think I'm going to plan on giving Esopus and the surrounding area a shot. Any idea what the regulations are like? Seems like the focus in the area is fly fishing, but I have also found some articles where the author is using spinning gear. I don't have any fly fishing experience so I would hate to get there and then find out I can't use my spinning gear.

Check the NYDEC regulations cause the Esopus might fall under the same Oct 15th closures as the Beaverkill and branches of the Delaware.

Good point. I just searched high and low and couldn’t find any info on a closure of the Esopus so I sent them an email to make sure.

spoke to NYDEC on the phone and they confirmed the Esopus stays open until Nov. 30th. Officially booked the campsite and will be hitting the creek all weekend. Can't wait to explore!!! :D

If anyone wanted to meet up that weekend theres tons of places to stay. I'll be somewhat roughing it, but who cares! :D

Any opinions on Esopus Creek in NY? Found a sweet campsite there and read a few enticing articles. Looks like a cool area and an awesome place to get away, not too far but not too close either.

It's a nice long river with lots of fisherman access points. Good rainbows and browns. Water levels are key. If we get alot of rain up there you are better off staying home. Just a thought. Will be up in that area next weekend camping.

Gotcha! Thanks for the info. At this point my buddy just let me know he can make it so we’re gonna go no matter what. If the water levels are crazy high there’s still lots of hiking in the area, but hopefully they won’t get too high! Just applied for the NYDEC permit too which is needed to access some spots. If you haven’t done that definitely do!

Esopus has quite a nice population of Browns which can be caught on fly or gear. There are rainbows as well, but the larger ones come up from the lake in the spring. Very pretty water and relatively little pressure. Good luck!

I've heard its great for both, spoke to a guy named Todd who i got in contact through akoop, told me I'm coming at a great time as the browns will be coming upstream to spawn. Pretty cool! Can't wait.
