I've learned that sticking the rod tip down (in a kayak) at too steep an angle is counterproductive, since once that fish dives again you can't control the slack.

Instead, when a fish starts zooming up for the sky, just hold your rod close and parallel to the water, and when the fish actually breaks surface dip your rod tip just slightly while maintaining pressure...once the fish lands, your rod angle is back to up/down immediately.

Fun fish: they dig, they jump, and sometimes they fake you out!

Great tip, thanks man! This totally makes sense. I am definitely going to put this method to the test next time out.

Cool little place to fish. I do best with the Trout just before sunset there, there always seems to be some surface action around.

I didnt even realize there were trout in there! It didn't seem like the ideal place for them, but i guess i'll have to bring some stuff for them next time too!

I tried to fish there early in May and forgot the drain plug in my yak. nearly swam back to the launch. Had the telltale "plink" bite off of a decent pickerel first and last time out not counting the near sinking. Did catch a couple stocker trout while exploring with a marabou jig.
