I have a $400.00 gift card I can use at Cabelas or Basspro. I'd like to keep at 400 or less but would go over a little if i have too.

I'd like to get a 9 foot rod and a reel to go with it.

Any suggestions would be great

Thanks

Not a bad budget to get something decent. Throwing plugs, soaking bait or both?

St Croix Mojo(3/4 to 4) with a Penn SSV 4500 is a nice combo that with braid will come at or below 400.

You may want to consider a longer rod. 10' or 10'6" for when the fish are further out. My setup is a Tsunami airwave elite 10'6" with a Tsunami shield 5000. Solid setup for under 300$ and leaves room for braid and lures. I mainly plug with lures from 1-3oz but great all around combo

Spheros 5000. Just try not to dunk it. Unless splurging for a van staal, don't dunk any reels lol.

There's a ton of rods available in the $200 range too.

You can get away with a 8'6 to 9 ft rod in the back but a 10'+ would be ideal Oceanside.

Fisherman, the ssv 4500 can also be ordered with the Live Liner option. is that a feature that I want in a surf caster. I'm thinking it can come in handy when fishing clams etc ?

That depends on your preference. The 9 foot Mojo is a plugging rod more then anything else IMO. Poppers, metal lips, spoons, bucktails, etc. If you intend to soak some bait with it getting the liverunner isn't a bad option, but overall the rod is more for plugging. At least in my view.

hey fish i just received the reel still waiting for rod...but the reel is a little on the heavy side. I hope it will feel more balanced/lighter when mounted to rod?
