The Temps have started going down again recently, so we didn’t think the bite would be there this Sunday. Just like when a cold front hits and the bite dies down during the summer. Little did we know this Sunday would be Epic. It was one of the best few hours of power fishing I have EVER experienced. As for my buddy Jon, quite possibly the best day of his fishing career ever.

I rigged up our combos before heading out in anticipation of the overcast day. Small pink/white jig head with a 3’white Freshwater Gulp swimming mullet. The other rod with a small bass hook with a red 3’ worm paddle tail. Hit the water, he’s fishing white, I got red. First cast, boom… 3lb Largemouth. Before we could snap a photo, butterfingers drops her in the water. We were both upset and remained silent and kept casting. He’s starts catching the a few crappie and a few dink bass. I still have no hits. He’s at 5 fish to my 0, so I made the move to a small Silver and white Keitech swimbait. Not a single hit either. He’s at 6 now to my 0. I said fine, you damn picky fish. You only want WHITE, fine… Made the switch, small jig, white grub, 2 cast equals 3 fish landed.
The next fish was pretty insane. His Rod tips goes down, I see him struggling trying to reel this fish in. After a good hard fight, this beast emerges. I immediately start yelling and walking over. DO NOT LOSE THIS FISH. DO NOT LOSE THIS FISH. LIP THE FISH PROPERLY THIS TIME. I might have cursed once or twice too to properly secure the fish. Second biggest bass I have ever seen in real life (ive caught a 7lbr so I knew this one was up there). The pictures speak for themselves. This fat girl was big and beautiful. She measured a lil over 21 inches, which puts her around 6lbs. That’s a fish of a NJ lifetime right there. Not many 6+lbs LMB swimming in our waters.

We fished on for the next 2 hours and lost track of what we caught. Caught everything from dink bass, to giant crappie, decent perch, decent bass…etc. On the way out, we hit the honey hole one more time. WTF… he catches another monster. Hard to say if it was the same hungry fish from above, or it was another monster 6lbr. Who knows, who cares, it’s was freaking awesome all over again.

Totals for the day, 40+ fish. Approximately 12 bass, 25 crappie, 3 yellow perch. Unbelievable for 3+ hours of fishing in late January. Some of you guys are rooting for ICE, I am doing the Anti-ICE dance… ahahaha. Bring on the Open water.:D

Very nice Bass and some solid Crappie too, loving that double header pic! So many Bass guys wrap it up early fall but I've seen many a big Bass caught Jan-March before all the amateur Iaconelli's emerge from their hibernation :p.

Yeah, not sure why guys stop fishing in the fall. Bass just get sluggish in the cold, but they are still feeding. Smaller and slower is the way to go.
As long as I can cast, I am out there fishing for em. If the ice gods give us ice, looking forward to drilling a few holes as well.

White, pearl, silver...etc... definitely my all time go to colors.
Put a gun to my head to catch a fish, I'm grabbing a white/pearl grub on a small jighead.
Try the Gulp line of baits.
