Who likes ice fishing ----- this guy...

Since I couldn't wait for ice to form here .... again what do we do .... of course go searching for it.

Reading up on some reports decided to head out and hit up Schroon lake upstate....

What can I say .... hard to fish a new body of water but we made the best of it and even managed to get some fish on ice ...

First stop was a bait shop to stack up on nice fat and juicy bait for a time when we get back on ice here .... then of to lake we went... ice thickness was anywhere from 10 to 14 inches at north end so IceMusky decided it will be a great idea to drive up on the ice and safe us a long walk .... Not this guy ....for me it was better to take a walk behind him just in case ... Ice was holding up pretty well besides temperatures in 40s and no wind .... set up on a deepest part of the lake and waiting game was on ... Saturday was a slow day for us with only one flag shooting up (and of course fish was lost once reel was spooled) and me just playing around with tiny perch. Nothing on jigs besides that .... short time later Mikey and Rocco showed up and of course before day was over Mike had to show us that fish was there for a taking with one laker landed.

Saturday night decided to move to a different spot and spend the night there. Morning was much better with IceMusky taking us to school with two beautiful lakers being landed (one on a jig and another one on tip up) Had multiple misses on jig after that in deeper waters while shore waters kept on producing damn perch. Even managed to land one fall fish as well.

My buddy learned a hard way to put up leaders for pike with one having a great run of but cutting through his braid like knife through butter.

Overall great time to be out with great friends .... Landing some fish on a new body of water was a big plus. Might have to make a trip there again while waiting for ice to come back in Jersey.

Beautiful area indeed! Probably my favorite area in the NE. Can't beat the scenery and pristine waterways the Adirondack park provides! Really wish I could've made this trip! I've frequented the area quite a bit in the past. Great report and pics MANIACS!!! :D

If you want to catch lakers, LL salmon, browns etc in NY state this time of year I would not ice fish.. You will need to tow a small boat, but the open water of Cayuga Lake will get you a lot more fish and bigger fish than ice fishing the Adirondack lakes.. Fishing has been hot up here at Cayuga , but its all open water believe it or not,,, Otsego Lake in Cooperstown is a very productive lake for ice fishing with a better variety of fish than Schroon, and its a lot closer for NJ fishermen.
Not sure of the ice conditions this year, but if you like to ice fish, its well worth checking out.. bob

As of a week and half ago there was very little ice on Otsego, mostly on the southern part and was only 3" but it has been above freezing for about a week so highly doubt any safe ice. Yes the finger lakes are great, Cayuga and keuka come to mind but if I had to pick an in lake don't think you can beat champlain with George a close second. With that said there's just something about jigging lakers through the ice and this year the Adirondack lakes are the only option

Yes, if you want to ice fish, this year its pretty much all the way north.. Otsego is a more productive lake than the Adirondack lakes, but some years it doesn't get good ice.. Its been a mild winter so far.. The Finger Lakes have better trout and LL salmon fishing than Lake George, and a lot less pressure, but they generally don't freeze enough for most ice fishermen.. Depends on the year.. Champlain is a wonderful fishery, but its huge, and the fish aren't everywhere, and a guide might be a good choice first time up... bob

Yeah mid 30's to mid 40's for weeks on end is WEIRD in NY state.. We usually have ice from early Dec until April.. not gonna happen this year.. thats fine with me as I don't ice fish, and a lot of lakes up here get hammered all winter,,, bob
