Ice contest 2017!

Ok gentleman talked with a few of you and looks like there is enough interest for another ice contest. Gonna make it bigger and better. Will be contacting some companies to try to get extra prizes so the more entries the better chance we have at getting sponsors.

Pretty much same rules as past years with a few minor changes.

Tournament will run from January 1st first till midnight March 13th. No entries will be accepted after

Sign up by midnight January 9th.
I will post an image on December 31st that you will need to print out and have in your entries.

Two images will be need, 1st of you holding the fish. 2nd picture will fish on the ice with ice contest image, and measuring tape. **** rule change**** fish and measuring tape should be bumped against a flat surface. You can buy a bumper board (saw cheap ones on amazon for $8), use edge of your sled, piece of wood, tackle box it doesn't matter as long as the nose of the fish and tape is bumped against something flat and we can read the tape measure. Tape measure should be easily to read, tail of the fish should be touching or as close as possible. Please place the tape measure below the fish closer to the camera so it's easier to read.. It's not that hard guys if you use common sense.
If you don't use a bumper or picture is poor, the 3 judges and myself Will come with an estimated measurement. If an estimated fish ties with a bumper fish the bumper fish will win end of story.

I will be looking for 3 active members that aren't entering the tournament that are willing to judge in case we have some close entries at the end of the tournament. PM me if interested

Fish must be caught in new jersey in public water boundary waters greenwood lake and Delaware River are included.

*Oddball category is any species that there isn't a category for, could be channel cat, hybrid, golden shinners, trout, carp, rockbass or anything other species. Njfishing members will vote for their favorite or most impressive catch

Last but not least is the Ice King award. For each category (not including oddball) will award points. Each member will only receive points for there largest fish. For example if saxmatt catches the three biggest muskies he only gets 10pts, the next member with the largest muskie will get 9pts. So it's important for guys to try to enter large fish in each category even if they aren't big enough to win.

1st place is 10 pts,
2nd place is 9pts
3rd place 8pts
Etc right down to the 10th place fish receiving 1pt.

At the end of the tournament the 2017 Ice King will get a nice award and prize.

If you don't like these rules don't enter the tournament.

Contest will cost $20 like last year-- I will jump make a $100 dollar donation to get this party started.

I hope all goes well and we get better ice than last year. Should be interesting to say the least, LOL! I just had a thought. Since the deadline to enter is closing in...if you gave each participant a unique random 4 digit number instead of a 'token' to display in the fish pic that would allow people to sign up later without being able to cheat. You wouldn't receive your unique random number until you paid up and then that number (printed or written on a piece of paper) would take the place of the usual 'token' and be mandatory in all pictures.

It would also eliminate people forgetting their token when going fishing as they could just write their unique number on a scrap piece of paper or something.

Just a thought.

there have been way too many questionable pics in the past contests. requirement to bump the fish is overdue and very welcome. it shouldn't be a problem, just keep a bump board in the sled... they are actually easier and faster to use than tape measures, especially if you get a cradle type one. and if the fish won't cooperate or you otherwise can't get the required pics you can always make the decision to be like saxmatt and put it back alive instead of killing it to get a prize. plus if you don't like the rules, participation is not mandatory. :p

It is simple only major change is the bumper board because when we are looking at two pictures of a 39.5" pike and a 39.75" pike with the fish bump against anything flat will make it that much easier to make sure the right fish wins. You don't have to bump the fish but if it ends up being to close to tell between two fish the bumper fish will win.

If something hangs you up or its a brutally cold day use a boga or a firm grip on the tail and keep the fish in the water till you get things straighted out. I got a muskie several years ago that Matt has caught twice since than because using common sense and being prepared.

Put the tape measure and fish nose against your jet sled. Throw a flat piece of wood in the sled. Use a flat tackle box. It doesn't have to be a bumper board just needs to be bumped against something flat. Will make judging the fish easier

That's what I use, hasn't broke yet. I wouldn't slam it around though haha.

Guys, you have to put a little effort in here if you want to do the contest...have everything you need for a contest pic with you to each hole you check, that's it. Just be planning to take the contest pics every time. Having a buddy with you will make it so much easier to get the fish back quick.

Honestly, if you don't want to put that little bit of extra effort in, a c&r contest probably not for you. It's just a small friendly competition but it's still different than just going fishing the way you usually do.

Yep I can do that. My hope is once this artic chills comes over us tonight we will start building ice, and once we have ice the entries boards should stay busy enough with guys posting and upgrading with how important it is to finish as high as you can in each category. Should make it pretty busy hopefully soon than later.

i say extend the deadline...once people actually see ice forming on their favorite lakes they will want to join. The rest of us will be fishing with our personal number tokens already so it won't be unfair to any of us. The more people in a contest the more fun it is and this might help increase the participation. I don't really see any drawback to extending the deadline since anyone registering late won't be able to take a legal photo anyway until they pay (they won't have a number).

only other thing i can think of to boost participation is to make chicken noises directed towards anyone not entered yet...

I don't really see any drawback to extending the deadline since anyone registering late won't be able to take a legal photo anyway until they pay (they won't have a number).

1. I will run leader boards, was waiting for some competition as it's pretty easy with 1 or 2 entries in the categories. But overall it's important for everyone to at least enter there own personal best for each category as you will receive points even if you don't win contest.

2. I'll double check bUT believe the guys who haven't paid yet all are planning to pay my mail and everyone has reached out for my address. Unfortunately I had a family member go south for the winter and is having her mail forwarded down there and just so happens all mail including mine has stopped coming. Working on getting it straightend out. I'm not worried obviously they don't pay in a timely fashion I'll speak with them. I also thought about guys just fishing in till they caught a worth while fish than send the money but we all know who signed up and they will be expected to pay no matter what. They don't pay I'm sure all of us would have no problem letting them know how big of a scum bag move it was, plus I know I wouldn't plus any one else running contests to not let them enter any future tournaments even if they wanted to pay front.

3. You are right, should ***edit** with any changes and clarifications I'll work on it.

Looking at the future cast on the all weather sites has us staying pretty mild in the northern corridor til the end of the month! Sheeeeesh! Yes if it is a tie big boy. I'll have the judges look it. Both entries have there mouth slightly opened not uncommon for bass, one is on t-square which is very accurate if lined up perfectly, the other is lined up on a piece of wood and tape which is very accurate if lined up perfectly

Looks to me like round 3 hmm never seen it make scratch ice in March to get back out middle of March pretty crazy but it will happen. History in making gotta get back out on the ice and I will tomorrow and Saturday possibly next weekend if Temps hold as they say. I would be glad if the derby extended another week may give a chance for those who haven't fished on the ice this season to get out :) and possibly catch a slob pre spawn fish, nows the time.

P.s. thanks for everyone's patience, most winters are usually pretty slow for me yet with even the mild winter it feel like I was living at work and when not at work always had something going. I will give credit to fasteddy as it may appear pretty easy to run a contest but isn't as easy as it would appear. I think one on Facebook would be easier as we cold message back and fourth and get notified everytime someone posts or had a question. Who knows but thank you for everyones involvement.

Totally understand I'm sure all the guys agree. For future contests we should make a post or PM reliable tourney men that want to participate 1 week in advance and hold a derby the old school way. Pick a water body we can vote different water bodies per different weekend days throughout icefishing season thru PM or a simple post. Saturdays and Sundays are better for most due to work and convenience matters make it fair and have every one meet and greet at a boat ramp beach area or state Park access area say 6 or 7 am. Everyone agrees to largest fish in inches say for pike bass pickerel perch musky whatever it may be for that day. Everyone get in on a 20 or 25 dollar entry per weekend tournament day and have everyone fish the same waterbody body so everyone can be present at measuring and seeing what was caught. Payout will be great FYI think about it. Gives more people chances to actually win. Have a reliable source holding the money at the end of the derby the money goes to the winner. Derby can run 7 am to 1 pm. Some people have responsibilities family or just can't be out all day in the environment so a 6 hour derby is just fine. You'll have more entry's as its to most people's convenience and less arguments n posts regarding measurements n payments. The best way think about this for next year guys n gals. Maybe I'll run the derby next year:)

In all honesty seems like I am getting the short hand of the stick here. Ice king gets a prize from the donated money no? Why divide my winnings to each of the category payouts. I'm losing out here I prefer a prize for the 210$ donated money since no grants or bait shop gift cards were issued by no one as mentioned at the start of the derby rules. I'd rather have a 210$ gift card or a 210$ icefishing gift purchased with receipt to show $210 was spent. I won the ice king award and my money should not be split in all categories. It should be $380 divided by 6 category winners for $63.3 each not $90 each. Let's be fair and honest here and if you have no time to buy a prize then I should receive cash. $210 donated money plus $63.3 for pike winning entry which equals to $273. Also if I split the oddball catergory it should be an extra $31 to the $273 which be a total of $304.
