Seems like alot of bodies of water are low or are being lowered. Any thoughts on where we will have safe ice?

Way too early to tell. Lower water levels would lead me to believe they'd cool faster. Hope it's better than last year.

The Only fact right now is surface water temps are 5-6 degrees higher right now than they were this time last year, for what it's worth.

Hey there Seth,
With El Nino forming right now I would say we will be on safe ice in December already. Personally I think we in for a good long ice season until April. Cant wait already.

My prediction is December 13th which Is about average. Earliest I've stood on ice was November 18th and would have been fishing it if I wasn't headed to ny the next day. Latest ice was like January 2nd. And mid December seems to a consistent average first ice date

call me a pessimist but i'll just wait and see haha. if it's like last year, tip toeing around those early ice spots gets kind of old pretty quick. I'm enjoying fall right now (the best time of the fishing season, better than ice :D)

My concern isnt the temps as much as it is water levels. Seems like alot of draw downs this fall.

Im kind of hoping for a lot of snow...i know it can be bad for the ice, but some of these lakes are so low right now id welcome a stormy winter.

Last year was not good. Coming off two fantastic years before, that was a disappointment. I think it was 2013-14 that was the best ice season I've seen in many years (Round Valley was frozen solid, how often does that happen?) I was still fishing through 14 inches of ice in late March. 2014-15 was pretty good too. Solid ice through late March. Last year was close to 2012-13, which was terrible.
I don't recall two years in a row like last year or 2012-13. Great seasons in a row like 2013-14 and 2014-15 are also pretty rare. The normal ice fishing season in NJ seems to run late Dec or early Jan. to Late Feb and ocassionally into early March. I'd be happy with that.
