The fall topwater bite for the smallies is on big time. I have been fishing the Susqy weekly for most of the spring and summer with good success. Wolpacks of smallmouth aggressively chasing bait fish have appeared. Yesterday I ran into 5 groups of large fish feeding. I only caught a couple of fish below 16" yesterday as I was hog hunting throwing only topwater. When I found the packs I was able to pick 2 or 3 out each one. I had 7 fish over 19", 8 18", and many 17s. It was not a numbers day, but the quality was there. Get out there and enjoy for the next couple of weeks.

A 19" Smallie is a very good fish, to have multiple must have been awesome. I'll be on the Big D tonight into tomorrow targeting Walleye as usual, but if they aren't biting I will have to switch over to Smallies.

I know that the Delaware is very low as is the Susqy. Many of my big fish were found in very shallow water of less than a foot. Do not be afraid to throw in very skinny water. Good luck

Sorry but I did not take any pictures. i was wading most of the time. You can take a look at a 24 1/8 monster that was just caught at river smallies.com at the east fishing reports section. You need to sign up to view that section, however. A friend that runs a guide service, that I use, posts a lot of pictures at reel river adventures on facebook. Take a look at his pictures on April 27 and 21 for some eye candy.

i absolutely love topwater river smallmouth action, even med sized poppers on the fly rod.sounds like your into some nice toads, good for you.hope to hook up with a couple toads myself.the rivers are low we need slow steady rain to bring up levels without clouding up the water.
