Hey all,

Anyone know where the thermocline is right now in Waywayanda?

Im taking out my Brother-in-law for some salmon and rainbows on Saturday excited to test out my new downrigger, tackle and Okuma Water Wolf Camera for some awesome shots.

We will be trolling and of course drifting with live herring.

Hoping to get some bigguns!:D

LOL:D...I have one of those too... But it is a portable Eagle about 25 years old now...The screen was all pixelated the last time I used it, so I am going by memory this time. Until I can save up and get a new one.

I picked up the Lowrance Elite 3x for my kayak from Dick's, color fish finder for $100. Marks fish, shows the thermocline. No GPS or any of the crazy features, but you can't beat that if you are on a budget.

Another post on here was successful dropping herring 20-25 ft. at Wanda, if that helps.

Pop's got me that one for my bday this year. I like it, except on Monksville where it shows you all the fish you're not catching and the big balls of bait that have nothing feeding on them! The draw on my only battery from the ff and the trolling motor was too much, though and I haven't been using the fishfinder.

Skunk: how are you marking the thermocline on it, just amping up the sensitivity? I was just assuming the depth that the fish were most concentrated at was a good indicator, but I'd really like to know if there is a better way.

last question I had is I want to target bowfin this time.

I have been reading they situate themselves in the northern end to the left of the boathouse in the coves. Is that true?

What should I use as a setup and bait?

there should not be a thermocline in wawayanda or any of the deep lakes that hold trout year round, that's why the trout survive so well in them. the shallow parts of the lake might have some stratifying but that's about it. that's my understanding at least.

i think the line you see (thermocline) is actually just the concentration of all the small fish and and little organisms and stuff that kind of congregate in the deepest available water with good oxygen levels. I can def see it on mine too.

I've read where you can actually get a line from the change in water density at the thermocline, but was wondering if that applied to expensive units or if it was possible on the lowrance 3x? I remember messing with different settings like higher frequency for shallow water and the lower frequency for deep water, and I think slightly adjusting the sensitivity helped turn some blobs and blocks into actual arches, but never was able to see a thermocline (that I know of).

Hey Guys,

So my trip to Waywayanda was unsuccessful this go around. I will not be going back there until I have my own craft or after memorial day as I had one of my worst experiences yet. None of their batteries were charged fully from last weekend so we were given 2 batteries with like a 40% charge on each. When one ran out we would have to come back in for a new one, which limited our fishing time, The prop on the motor they gave me was all chowed up and was not turning at all in the water as the bolt needed to be tightened and then both batteries died on us when we were on the southern hole. To top it off, when rowing back in, we were not moving at all because of the wind gusts, and one of the oars broke...consider us stranded at this point! thankfully there was another couple on the lake that towed us back in.

Although the salmon were not biting that day (Guess they were only cuious about my Storm Blueback Herring) I was able to test out my new tackle and portable downrigger. I did get some trails both 25 ft down and 15 ft down...looks like they were very spread out... a couple of screenshots below:D:

Now i guess its time to start searching the Rockaway and SB for for first Trout!!

I usually see a lot of weeds/debris floating in the water when this happens. Just my thoughts.

Thanks! The videos are a lot cooler, but I do not have editing software as I need a new computer anyways.. Each video is 20 minutes long and about a gig of space. Figured I would take snapshots and post those instead. I am going to start using the camera more often now so hopefully a lot more screenshots will be posted! :D..

I am going to attempt to use it when trout fishing in the next few weeks. Hopefully I learn something from it and it doesn't scare them all off...lol

I always thought in deep lakes, that they would stay closer to the bottom in the cooler water during the summer months. As the cooler weather comes, the trout and salmon move up in the water column more towards the surface where angles throw spinners at them and do well.

However, I could be wrong as I was marking fish 7-10 feet from the surface on Saturday in 80-90 feet of water and the water hasn't really turned since I went back in July.

Lakes with any real depth will always develop a thermocline. You can see that there is a 10 degree drop between 25 and 30 ft in the above post. Trout can live below the thermocline all summer long if there is enough oxygen which there is in large infertile lakes like RV. In fertile lakes there is too much decay below the thermocline which uses up the oxygen.
There is no such thing as turnover in lakes, or fly casting for that matter. As the water cools surface water is pushed against the windward shore and is forced downward. When it cools to the temperature of the interface it mixes with it and it disappears. The coldest densest water is still at the bottom so there is nothing to force a big fast upheaval. Mixing does occur but over the course of months.
