Hit it around midnight. Bit downstream of my usual haunts. Started with 3.75" soft plastics. 5th or 6th cast I got bit. Def a good fish. Substantial amount of weight and head shakes. Get her to my feet and landed a 26+" pig eye. Sweet.

Threw soft stuff for an hour more with just some tail nibbles. Switched to larger plugs and casted for another hour with just a bump. Right before packing it in I wandered downstream with my head lamp on and spotted a big ol set of eyes in a shallow pool. Clicked off the lamp and lobbed my plug upstream of the fish. Few turns of the handle and WOMP! Fish thrashed in the shallows then darted into the deeper current upstream. Felt reaaaal good! Got her up to my feet and slid her up on some green muck. Thick thick fish with a massive head. She taped out around 27 and change. Awesome night with 2 quality fish.

I've gotten some really nice walleyes on the river this year...they're doing quite well, feeding and reproducing. Here's the porn fellas...

It sure beat the skunking I got the last time I hit the river. Both fish took a min or two to revive but drenched me when they took off. Good things. Good things.

Hoping I get a 30" this fall on the river. Gonna keep at it. There's enough food for them to grow quickly in there that's for sure.

Wow Jigman! Nice reward for the night effort. I'm curious, do you ever run into wildlife while shorefishing and trekking the river at night? Bears, bobcats, skunks, rowdy raccoons? I'd love to try it, but I'm sure I'd be jumping out of my skin every time I heard a squirrel kick up some leaves in the dark. I don't know how yous do it, especially alone. Again, wonderful reward for your efforts!

Eh, I've grown used to the noises by now. A beaver scared the crap out of me about a week ago though. Tail slapped the water like 20 ft from me. Thought I got shot at hahaha... One fall night I had a rutting 8 pt buck approaching me on the river with zero fear. Luckily I heard his steps through the moving water. I clicked my head lamp on and he was CLOSE. Grabbed a rock and threw it in the water behind him and he took off.

No bears knock on wood. Foxes, coons, skunks, possum, deer, snakes, beavers, musk rats, various large birds. It's all good. Keeps my senses heightened!

Yikes! That's serious! There are some 3+ ft northern water snakes along the banks. I wear high boots to avoid bites up to my knee!

great Walleye!! do I have a shot of catching these guys at other times besides overnight trips? I would love to try my luck for a nice fish like this, but don't have the ability to leave my house at 10pm and stay out till 2am on a week night.

Ive been reading up on them as I would like to target walleye at some point. I read that choppy water and cloudy days would be my best bet, next to eddies and in the dam overflows, or a little further down by big boulders. Ill have to give it a shot someday and report back.

.

Great fish!

How do you know they are reproducing?
Sometimes when I fish the Delaware River at night, if I shine my headlamp at the river's edge, I can see the reflective eyeballs of baby walleyes reflecting back at me. It appears the baby walleyes move to water as shallow as their body is high to feed on the tiny creatures at the water's edge.

I haven't heard anything about walleye reproducing in the Delaware. I think the baby walleye are just walleye that were stocked really small.

The population in this unstocked river appears to be flourishing. I've only been fishing the river going on 3 years and I've caught walleyes from like 8" to 28". While I do not have direct evidence they're reproducing the variation in size and increased numbers lead me to believe they are. I'm getting them, as skunk said, some 70 plus miles away from the Delaware. The river is getting healthier, forage is exploding and ultimately, nature finds away.

Maybe Mark B can chime in? I'm interested in his input/knowledge.

Yep. In various locations. But mostly cops. They see someone covered up with a face and neck buff on at 2 am and get rightly suspicious until they see I'm not carrying a stolen flatscreen hahaha... Once they see the fishing rod and the bags of garbage I tend to collect they pretty much leave me be. Bringing the garbage of others out from a fishing area is sort of a pass in the eyes of some law enforcement officials.

Being bald and sweet blooded, the skeeters love me. The buff protects my neck ears and parts of my head my hat doesn't cover. I don't like messing with bug sprays if I don't have to.

You guys have any recommendations on a brand/model? I am worried that they will be hot and uncomfortable in the heat

Madrone. Theyre better material than the buff brand plus they stand up way better in the wash. They don't get all pilly either. Less snug, better material. They brand is known mostly for their hats. Worth a look just a few dollars more.
