Went to the upper reaches of the Ramapo River yesterday with a friend and we got to see some cool smallmouths along with sunfish, perch and fallfish. Most bass were on the small side but eventually we came across a couple of slightly bigger fish. Photo is attached. Not my PB smallie but i am guessing the fish was around 16-17" range.

This time of year the ramapo river fills up with crayfish, and when they molt, the bass go crazy for them. Saw hundreds of crayfish in the river. Didn't use them as bait, used mostly lures but i bet a live crayfish would be one of the best ways to catch a smallmouth on this river right now!

Nice SMB. The PO is also loaded with turtles and northern water snakes both readily take crawfish.

Nice fish, cool pic!! Never buy crays at the bait shop, but always consider it......

Definitely a healthy looking bronze, nice catch!! Was in that area a couple weeks ago and tried using some live crawfish but had no luck, I was there in the midday heat though. Wasn't that far upstream as you;), but was also able to see my 1st wild mink family while catching some panfish, thought that was pretty cool.
