View Full Version : NY state bass reg question
Is it legal to target, catch and release large and smallmotuh bass in NY prior to bass opening on the 18th? (I know it is not in Ontario and enforced) and was wondering about NY. Thinking about a trip to Oneida soon. Thanks!

Just looked it up. It indicates artificial lures only till the 3rd Saturday in June so I would imagine you are allowed to fish for them. C&r only, artificial only.......

And... don't have any bait.... live, dead or otherwise (scented baits) in the boat and/or on your person;)
Good luck:)
Thanks guys! We only fish artificials, so it's nice to know we won't be hassled and legal! We never fished Lake Oneida but heard good things.

I wonder, is a scented plastic illegal? Say a KVD Caffeine shad or a fruit scented Mann's Jelly Worm?

I have a brother who lives up there, we have been fishing that lake for years, the walleye fishing is excellent, and the smallmouth fishing is even better, For the smallies, target the rocky shoals and weed edges in the coves on the north side of the lake. Here is a pic of the biggest smallmouth of my life caught just to the east of Godfrey point. Never did really great on Largemouths though, most of those were caught in the marinas, but still not many. Good luck.
Thanks crewchief2, we can use all the info we can get!

My pleasure, on the shoals, use crankbaits, in the weed edges, spinnerbaits do well, for both walleye and bass, we always catch a lot of fresh water drums on the shoals too, not much on the table , but fun to catch, they can average 3-5 lbs. When you get up there, get a good lake map, it will be invaluable, it's a big lake so you dont want to waste time searching for the right areas. Any questions, feel free to pm me. Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!
