I saw a post by a captain a few weeks ago about the east winds killing the bluefishing. We're planning to head to the Belmar area this coming weekend for some sea bass fishing, and I see that they are calling for east winds. Does this have any effect on wreck fishing on a party boat or not?

An east wind most certainly does effect party boat fishing, if anchored it keeps the bow pointed east and the stern pointed west. Other than that, there's only one way of finding out for sure, get out there and wet a line.

East winds are generally unfavorable for a variety of reasons :
- Our predominant wind direction during the summer is West, South or South West and other directions typically means unsettled weather is in the area.
- Strond east winds make the seas build inshore while a west wind knocks them down.
- East winds usually bring warmer water inshore

As far as bottom fishing, its the seas and the motion of the boat that makes it difficult to feel bites. And, since east winds also brings warmer waters inshore thats not great either since most of our wreck dwellers prefer colder water.

Having said all this, if the winds are 15 knots or less it should not effect the fishing.

Thanks for the good info. I'm looking at this weekend's forecast (I know, the weather people will be wrong this far out anyway), but they all agree on an east wind - but light. Hope all else holds with the weather as living 3 hours away with a busy family, not a whole lot of options to get down to fish anymore!
