that there were a few private messages sent to other members on this board about a photo of my 7 YEAR OLD SON holding a LARGE MOUTH BASS with BASEBALL GLOVES ...questioning MY ABILITY TO TEACH MY SON the proper way to handle fish.
1) You can message me directly and speak to me like an adult. I'll even give you my phone number if you'd like to talk about it.
2) A picture sometimes doesn't tell the whole story.
3) I'M STILL PROUD AND DON'T GIVE A SH** WHAT YOU THINK

As long as he's out there fishing you should be proud. Nice fish that that kid caught. I do have an issue with your NY Giants hat! :eek:Lol! GO Eagles! :DGuys must be pretty bored if they are talking about a glove a kid wore. Get him one of those fishing gloves the pros use and see if that's approved.

Ahhhhhh yes, the keyboard critics! Don't worry about them, they suck! Always looking for something to pick on or criticize! Let the kid have his moment. He's probably still smiling from that day! What a great catch and fish for your 7 year old! Keep up the good catching!

Wow some people just have too much time on their hands. Wish I had that much time but of course if I did I would spend it on the water and not worrying public forum pictures

I agree with Bunker Dunker & DelawareRiver, spot on. But, we can't have winners without any losers, you know. Wait till he catches more & the fan base will definitely grow. I know I've got a lil "club" of fans that don't appreciate real competition. Keep them pics coming, we love to great fish & good times!!

There are whining ladies on every board, sadly this one is no different. Be happy for your kid and ignore the keyboard warriors.

Not for nothing, but I'll take a proper lip hold and belly support with a pair of gloves on over the 'shake n' bake, fish on the ground next to my boot' pictures I cringe at on a daily basis. If your boy is comfortable enough to hold the fish and stick his hands in a fishes mouth, he most certainly will be comfortable doing the same, sans the gloves, in the near future. Keep up the good work and don't stress it!

Once you get a good following and fan club you know you are doing something right! I know I have 4 or 5 guys that I have never met or talked with but hear though friends or caught Facebook comments that sure shot they don't care for me. Guess it's just a different mind set, I'm genuinely happy for anyone be it a friend or someone I've never met that catches a big fish, lots of fish, a big buck etc especially when I know they put their time in. Other guys are just jealous most likely because they have never caught a trophy fish.

Its all in good sport and also shows character. Amongst others, I showed my buddy Adam a pic of that monster flathead with the colors on it that you caught outta the river. Simply a superb looking fish!! Never met you, but I've got that pic saved in my phone & have no problem promoting another angler's skills. Keep them fish pics coming fellaz, get em ' up!!!

.
I scrolled back a few pages and found the picture you're referring to and I don't see anything wrong with it.
In fact, it's technically a good c&r hold with the bass held by his lower lip and his weight supported from underneath at the vent.

WOW! Really?
Getting on a 7yr old and his dad for how a fish was held for a pic?
Is this for real? Just asking cause it seems like it cant be true.
FWIW...glad to the see the kid fishing and catching and not glued to the Iphone or vid game.

I find taking a photo of a fish is one of the hardest things to do. Usually you are in the water, or on a boat, or a slippery river bank. Take into consideration these are all OUTDOOR photos in all kinds of weather with a slippery thing that has just been taken out of it's element and won't sit still for one moment. Then there are things moving around like tackle and equipment, and HOOKS, it's tough to say the least. The Trout Unlimited magazine I get they don't want you to take the photo if the fish is even out of the water !!! So it runs the full circle. I think there are just a few easy thing we can do to get that right shot and I found one of them is to use a small landing net, I found it makes taking pics that much easier. I saw no problem with the photo you posted, it is the internet so there will 1000 different opinions on anything posted.

Ah my favorite topic: fish handling
Three things came to mind when I looked at that photo. Here they are in order:
nice fish
why is he wearing gloves
whats that stuff all over the bass
Not everybody sees the same but this is what I saw. I tend to dwell on the minutia when it comes to photos so I can be a bit picky. However it does seem like I wasn't the only one. It is was it is. Agree to disagree. Life goes on.

Why is he wearing gloves? HE'S 7!!! He was targeting sunfish and didn't like the idea of trying to take the fish off the hook by himself with the spike. As a matter of fact I would say he's pretty damn smart to think of the idea by himself instead of NOT want to try and making me stand there and unhooking a thousand sunnys.
The stuff all over the bass is this awful horrible stuff that you find on the ground call GRASS!!!! It grows wild and if you don't control it can become a very big problem. It is known to cause stains on jeans so be very careful!
The kid was using a snoopy pole and brought that bass in by himself. Why is there grass on it? Because I immediately took it off the hook, showed him the proper way to hold it, snapped a picture and threw it back....
I didn't wash it off...make sure the fish was okay...hold him by his lip for 3 minutes in the water...and stress him out more...
so in fact - what I did was CORRECT.
Total time out of the water was less than a minute.
FYI he has graduated from the gloves to ease your concerns...

As long as it is a legal fish, he can make a hat out it if he wants.

Pulltaug- I have a 7 year old and getting him to lip a fish with our without gloves is difficult enough. Good idea with the baseball gloves. I tried finding fishing gloves small enough for him and my 4 year old daughter, next to impossible. Will go with baseball gloves also. Keep fishing, have fun with the kids and ignore the negativity. I don't understand the point of pictures of fish to post on a forum for strangers, but that's just me.
