Well it's that time of year again! The Trout are waiting for us! I was up at the Pequest 3 weeks ago or so and that place was still loaded up with big stockies from the fall stocking! Managed 1 wild Brown that day as well! Real pretty fish! It's go time Saturday morning at 8 am! YEA BUDDY!!!

Myself and a few buddies will be starting at the clean, pristine and picturesque Pohatcong creek! If you don't have anywhere to go or your not sure where to go PM me for the gps coordinates and c'mon down! This is an open invite for anyone interested in catching some Trout and having a good time! I'll be out there bright and early with my son Chase "CHASEPAIN"! Keeping the tradition going for years and years to come. It's part of my life and I can't get enough of the outdoors! Passing this tradition down to my kids makes me a proud dad! Proud to be American! Proud to have this freedom! Proud of the fine people at NJF&G for keeping this tradition alive and well in this beautiful small state! On that note............WHERE's EVERYONE HEADED FOR THE OPENER???

Let's get out there, have some fun and catch some fish guys and gals! See you out there!!!

This will be my first time fishing trout. I'm either going with a friend to I think he said Hackettstown or I'm just gonna show up at the local pond that is stocked at 7am and see if there's a spot left. I don't know how busy it gets with so many different areas being stocked.

.

The last couple of years I've been down in Florida for opening day. Last year I went down to Florida twice and couldn't make the financial stretch to be back in Florida again in time for April.

Unless somebody has a better idea, I'll probably to Seeley's Pond in Union County because it's the place I've always gone on opening day since I was old enough to drive.

The issue with that pond is some years the local "pescadores" poach all the trout before opening day. On those years, most of the people fishing there end up getting the skunk.

I really don't give a shit though. I prefer fishing for bass. Any trout from a put-and-take pond are just a bonus. It just pisses me off to get up early on a Saturday and not catch anything. I could stay home and not catch anything. :)

Don't like crowds. Got access to a private pond with about 75 rainbows @ 14 to 15 inches stocked in Nov. of 2015 waiting for my friend, myself, and the owner. What a nice way to spend the day. Good fishing to you ladies and gentleman of this forum.

Considering either the Musconetcong River or taking the boat out on Aeroflex.

Slight chance of getting to go on a private lake with a friend, which might offer my best chances.

We go for walks around the pond every couple days when it's warm. I saw people fishing last week supposedly for bass didn't see any buckets or stringers but you make a good point. The "poachers" are probably there super early/late. I wonder how many summons or finds fish and game write the last 2 weeks of March.

P.s... Have you seen the weather for next Sunday? High of 35? Maybe wear the black fishing gear!

I have been walking my dog along the Rahway in Cranford and Nomahegan Lake the every night the past week armed with a flashlight instead of my pole and have found a few spots just filled with trout. Unfortunately opening day also happens to be my wife's birthday (which she tends to make a big deal about) so I will only have an hour or two in the morning to use all the Intel I have been gathering. I Will probably hit one spot on Nomahegan hoping for one of those breeders and another on the Rahway (Cranford south side). If anyone local is interested in where I have been seeing the most trout shoot me a PM happy to share.

we stopped at cranford west on Saturday after the pequest open house. the cabins look like they are about to tip over. I don't mind the grime and the decrepit looking conditions but theyre just unsafe, no wonder everyone brings tents. I cant wait to drop my hobie and/or canoe in there with the kids and soak shiners, that water looks niiice.

I hear the fishing is great! I am definitely going to reserve a spot for a weekend sometime this summer. A tent is definitely the way to go! I have a contour map of the lake also, I think I found it online somewhere. It is surprisingly deep.

Maybe one day - when the state gets a little daring - they'll eliminate opening day in favor of a year round season. They can still release stocking dates but no more closed dates. This would eliminate the one day/opening weekend overkill and allow anglers to fish at their leisure whenever they desire. Of course the working folk will claim all the trout will be caught by those not working 9-5 like kids or retired folk. I can see that argument a bit but I would bet that's only 10-15% of the anglers out there. It still leaves plenty of trout for the rest of us. I have never been a fan of the crowds and the side by side by side fishing. Perhaps I'm in the minority on this since its always been this way.

Guess here is as good as any for a first post.
My son has been bugging me for a couple years now to go fishing. So opening day it is. We will be heading to either the D&R canal or feeder. Probably somewhere along rt 29. Or possibly in Lawrenceville off of Quaker Rd. I was also tossing around Assunpink Creek as well. Was going to access it off of rt 130 in Robbinsville. Kind of a first for both of us since it's been prob 15yrs since I've been out. Any tips for those locations would be awesome.

And thanks in advance. Looking forward to good times here.

Looks like those of us getting out this Saturday will be fishing in the snow, hahahahaha! Should be interesting! Good times will be had by all! I told my 6 year old "Chase" the weather wasn't looking too good! He asked "Why?" I told him it might be snowing and raining with some chilly temps. I then asked him what his thoughts were..............

His reply! "Daddy don't worry we'll just wear our winter coats with our hoods on! Don't forget to pack gloves! Were outta here!!!" That's what the kid said at age 6! I said "Ok then Chase, we're outta here!" Followed by a father son high five! Now that's what I'm talking about! This is what it's all about! The kids ready to roll out despite the crappy conditions! Yep, I live for this!!! We live for this!!!

"G", the levels on both the 'kill and Flat should be fine. The middle and lower Flat was stocked today and the creek was low while we were stocking but the rain has brought it up to a nice level.

As for your local park pond, even though it may not be on the 'Bonus Broodstock Lake' list this year it still gets a few bigguns. Whatever it gets in years it's on the list it receives 10% of that in off years. So if it gets 50 breeders in 'on list' years it'll have 5 this year. That's pretty much the standard formula for that program.

I started out at Echo Lake Park, saw maybe 15 trout caught by 30 or so anglers over 2.5 hours. I could only manage 3 small pickerel before I finally gave up. I swung by Franklin Lake just to see what was going on, I nailed a nice perch on a jerkbait, that was it. Left for home once the sleet started up heavy.

Here's a vid from Echo Lake, for those more interested in pickerel than trout:

Hit a local pond around 10am. 20 anglers with only a few between them. Started with pink garlic salmon eggs retrieved super slow with just a couple small split shot. Consistently hooked up. Caught 14 and left with my limit in about 1 1/2 hours.

I managed to catch a few at Seely's Pond.
I saw maybe 40 trout caught in the first two hours, with a few guys limiting-out and going home in the first half-hour.

Standing in cold, squishy mud when it's 30 degrees out isn't ideal fishing conditions, but my little bottle of Wild Turkey 101 made the conditions more tolerable.

Fish & Game usually sends a census taker out to the pond on opening day to see how we did, but I didn't see one this year.

I stopped by Nomahegan around 10 am and there was a census taker there. Any way to find out how many of the stockies were caught? In particular, how many of the broodstock are still out there for those of us who didn't get out today? My guess is quite a few as I didn't see too much action or many full stringers. The fish I did see caught were very small.

Hit the Po with my long time buddies. Slow pick all day in the freezing cold. I hooked 6 landed 5 and kept 3. Nice size trout to 13" caught on everything. Mealies pb trout magnet hair jig. No luck on salmon eggs though.

Opening day takes for ever to get here and then gone in a second. Plenty more fishing to come. Tight lines.

Salmon eggs worked for me today limited out on them that's all the rainbows wanted. Biggest trout i hauled in was 14" a nice breeder. the other 5 were all in the 9" to 10" range.

I have never in my life been out on opening day. When I was a kid I would ask my dad about going out on opening day and he would say simply "It's amateur hour". After seeing countless opening day photos of 100 or more anglers in a circle at Saxton Falls and hearing horror stories about it from many who went, I've stuck to that.

I almost did it this weekend. My buddy called me and wanted to take his boat out on Clinton Reservoir today. I pointed him the the weather report (which turned out to be not nearly as bad as it was it was supposed to be) and he agreed to try tomorrow instead.

Glad to hear these reports of success and for those of you who have secret spots, more power to you. It was obviously a great day for many. Many tight lines were had today! If you are on Clinton tomorrow and see two fat, 50 something guys trolling in a 14 ft Monark, be sure to wave to us.

How'd everyone do on opening weekend? Any NJFERS get a monster BREEDER? Anymore reports to share! It's been a great weekend of Troutin' despite the fact that Mother Nature's been a bit cranky! To everyone that got out, "CHEERS!!!"

TIGHT LINEZ!!!:D

Right back to Englishtown Mill where I crushed them yesterday and couldn't get a bite. Same baits same hole and nada. Moved to D&R Canal and had no love for 45 minutes. Last cast before moving on and landed a nice 14" fish on blue silver vibrax. Picked up another and then deadsticked a few on pink garlic egg and had a few more. Finished with 9 in total (ORL) over the next hour and it shutoff.

Limit in an hour and a half at Saxton falls. All the fish were taken on butter worms. Played catch and release for another hour or so before dad and i called it quits. Couldnt feel my feet anymore. haha

i got a couple hours in this weekend fishing the rahway between the 2 bridges off Mohawk. didn't see a single trout. my neighbor and a couple of his friends had a nice stringer of 7or8, I think they were the only ones in the whole stretch lol. I caught a couple nice sunnies. anyone know when they re-stock?

Fished Nomohegan from 8am-2:30 opening day and man was it cold and wet. Slow start to the morning but around 11 finally started to see some action. Caught about a dozen crappie and 3 stockies. My buddy caught 3 as well and we both lost a few including a huge breeder! No limit not crazy action just a great rainy day with friends.

Friday evening I walked a local stream to see how the stocking was. Was dismayed to see powerbait smeared on rocks. Walked upstream saw a "kid" fishing. Told him opening day was tomorrow. Kept walking. Saw the "kid" continue to fish so I tried calling operation game thief a few times, but the number was always busy.

Opening day was cold and slow. One guy at the hole I was at was doing well, everybody else not-so-much. Fish finally started biting for me a little after 10 and I was able to help my son get his limit. Didn't see any breeders come out. My biggest was around 12 1/2". Jigs, jigs, jigs.

My friend just told me he stopped by Hackettstown on Saturday and people were doing well on Power Bait. He didn't get a chance to fish.

As to calling game thief. I tried to myself on Friday and had similar results. People were "practicing catch and release" sure...

Sick fish dude!! WTG! I hit the local park for a little while Saturday morning. Still kinda crowded for the less than stellar weather. Only fish I saw caught were on soaking power cheese. They didn't seem to want to chase to much. I couldn't bring myself to do the bait thing so I'll wait for the water to warm a little and hopefully get out later in the week......
