Poison ivy & neoprene waders?

Hi all,

I'm a newbie on here.


I recently got a pair of neoprene waders and had a question I'm looking for input or advice on.

My question is how I could clean/treat them in the event I walk through poison ivy? Out near me, it's everywhere and I don't want to damage my waders. Urushiol is a tough oil to remove from some things and sticks around a long time.

Since you mentioned Urushiol, I'm guessing you may already know this, but Dawn is very good at removing the oil if you can do it before your skin starts reacting. It would probably work well on your waders but the process might be a PITA. You don't want to foam up the riffles just downstream of where you are.

There is a product called Tecnu that is a skin cleanser/wash for when you've been exposed, works well, but most homes have Dawn already on-hand.

In 40 years of wading I've never once thought about cleaning my waders because of poison ivy. I walk through and fish through the stuff all the time and I've never caught it from removing and putting on my waders.

I have same results & I catch it easily so I'm careful . Even LS shirts never remember catching it either way ! Direct skin exposure I'm done !! :mad:

Everybody has their own tolerance to poison ivy.
There are some people on this board that are apparently immune to poison ivy exposure (like Fast Eddie :) ) on one end of the spectrum and those that end up in the emergency room of their local hospital after a minor exposure on the other end of the spectrum.
Personally, no matter how much poison ivy I have to walk through, if I can wash up before the end of the day, I'll be fine. If I let it sit on my skin for 12+ hours, that area will break out in itchy blisters.

Immunity to poison ivy does not come with a lifetime guarantee. My father never got until he did. He stayed home from work for days.

Well I'll agree with using Dawn dish soap to clean the waders! Maybe use a soft scrub brush to make sure all the oils are scrubbed out of the waders! I know some people get this poison ivy stuff really bad! That sucks I guess! Bummer! I don't get poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac!!! I guess I'm special and have been for 39 years.....................

I second Tecnu! The stuff neutralizes PI oils on skin.... Don't see why it wouldn't work on waders.
