From my experience am still to pull fish out of that place.
Others on the other hand do well.

The reservoir can be really tough. If your grandson is just starting out, I'd say grab some worms and head to a small pond.

The water level there is down a couple of feet so you will have better shoreline access if you walk some of the trails around the reservoir. I suggest trying to the right of the boat ramp. You will find deeper water with stumps and lay down trees in that area with in casting distance.

I'd soak the largest shiners I could find or make an attempt at getting herring there alive. Also consider using small sunnies, too. Big bass down there and tigers too. I think they rent boats there which would open up a shot at the hybrids.

I met a guy last weekend while fishing the river. He's an NJF member and fishes the Squan exclusively. It's better to have a boat or rent one on this place obviously. This man also told me the secret bait of the Squan. After a little chit chat the angler started showing me pics of Hybrids up to 13 lbs. This angler has pulled multiple 10+ lb beasts out of there. I've fished it a few times long ago having some success by the stumps catching LM and panfish. Saw a couple Tigers in those stumps as well. Good luck dude!

I'm sure the hybrids there do not get as much pressure as they do on spruce due to the restrictions at Manasquan. There's virtually no night fishing at Manasquan and the launch doesn't open until 6 or 7 am. And I also think it's electric only. Might be wrong on that though. I can def see them growing into double digit beasts down there. While the numbers may be fewer per the state's stocking, they apparently make up for it in size!

Manasquan is electric only and requires a payment of 6 bucks to launch or you can buy the season pass. Good place to fish for me in the spring. Some good fish in those stumps.
