View Full Version : Medicinal Pot on Party Boat?
Pajay 1962

Went fishing over the weekend on a party boat in NJ. Observed a couple guys in the back of the boat smoking a joint. They did this a few times during the day, yet nothing was done. I'd like to know - isn't this illegal? I see almost every charter or party boat post that illegal drugs will not be tolerated (didn't see that poster on this boat). Could it have been for medicinal reasons and that's why nothing was done?! I know at least one mate saw it happening and nothing was done. To me and the others on the boat, it was just ridiculous that they couldn't leave their habit at home, even if it could possibly have been for medicinal purposes!

If you have an issue talk to the captain. If you don't like the outcome find another boat.

What boat is it. So we all know what boat to go on lol.
The person should had the decency of at least going upstairs to do their business. I don't see what is the big deal about it. Better than getting drunk and acting stupid or hurting someone or yourself. Like the moron this weekend who decided to drink a bottle of vodka and was hammered by 10 am falling all over the place. Pot smoking doesn't do that Just saying...... :D;)

Do I care if somebody smokes weed or not? Not at all, but on a public boat with likely many patrons on a weekend it's absolutely not the place to do that. Speak to the captain and see what he says, I wouldn't want to be around that myself.

I was being "nice" by saying medicinal - I'm sure it wasn't. Seriously, I thought that the captain or boat owner could get into some major do-do for that happening on their boat. Every boat I've been on said that drugs will not be tolerated.

I'm going to take a stance that might be a surprise to some of you. It is still illegal so one should be discreet on a party boat. Especially with kids on board. Charter or private boat, hey baby, whatever feels right. As long as it is ok with the captain.

Perfect point Joey. If someone has children lets say through the ages of 10 ` 14 do you really think that father wants his children to think that doing drugs in a public place is except able? Not that those *******s who were getting high in plain view give a shit about anything else other than their own needs.
Are we really to the point that we now choose people who get high over being drunk? Believe me, I am the furthest thing from a holy roller and I have seen more than most working in Newark for 25 years, but it`s really screwed up that so many people have such a liberal mindset, which explains a lot regarding where our society/country are headed. Common sense hit`s another all time low.

New meaning to party boat fishing lol...
Stoners offshore, regardless if private or charter, are the worstttttt! Especially chunking at night... Wobbling around, tying sh*tty knots, constantly asking to fire up the grill and endlessly thinks it's a good idea to rig up a donut and set it down into the slick or feed my live squid chocolate chip cookies. Def don't let them even consider gaffing a boat side fish.
Keep it on the party boat or back at the dock... And always pass left! Haha!

Yeah it's real fun till it isn't
My buddy just got back from court cause his medical marijuana son in another state got a judge to sign a restraining order against his Dad
Stoner boy said he was paranoid his dad was going to shoot him
The judge finally got the other side of the story and terminated the restraining order because the boy lied.
The problem is my friend can kiss his hunting lease goodbye this year since it will take that long to get his shotgun back.
Half of skunk smokers are turning psychotic or other mental problems with long term use - like playing Russian Roulette with a double barrel shotgun.
gotta respect the boats rules, but im on the whats the big deal side. be discrete, be respectful, keep it away from the kids, light up, fish hard and enjoy the day !

Medicinal Marijuana can not be smoked in public. It must be smoked at home or otherwise in private. The laws are not clear concerning transporting it or using it in a location other that ones private residence.
These guys were just living it up and having a good time.
Why do you think they call it a "party boat"?

I did for years,, School bus driver. Even if I was getting "second hand" exposure, it could bring a positive, and I'd be gone...Our testing was random as well.. anytime on any given day.
One time, I was sitting at a traffic light, stopped. A guy in a van ran into my bus. Rear ended while stopped.
He goes on his merry way, after getting an "insufficient brakes" ticket, I am taken from my bus on the spot, another driver substituted, and taken to the bus garage, where there is a drug inspector waiting for me, and I get piss tested and breathalyzed, while the driver that hit me while I was stopped, is driving around.
So yeah, these days, I want to be no where around anyone thats smoking horseshit on a headboat.. It could cost me a job... bob

Easy there Ronald Reagan. Maybe it's because people are starting to figure out that it's not as bad the the government has made it seem for the last 70 years. Don't start bringing politics into this as the reason for the negativity towards it is because of politics in the first place.

If you are on a Party Boat be respectful to others on the boat especially kids or go upstairs - Dumbazzzes. If it bothered yo that much you also should have asked a mate or the Captain to tell those Dumbazzes to stop or do something about it
Charter boat totally different ball game right there
To each is own , I have to fish next to guys who chain smoke and are piss drunk sometimes, it is a party boat and you should know what your getting into when you get on one
I would rather fish next to a stoner than a drunk - much easier to deal with -IMHO and experience

Did you break the speed limit at all...even by 1mph on your way to the boat?
I'm sure you did...so why is ok for you to break the law while others can not?
I learned what weed smelled like for the first time when I was on the Miss Belmar 2 at the age of 7...also learned what a drunk at 9am looks like as well! My dad was there every step of the way explaining things to me...not hiding me from reality like many of today's parents.
How many guys were on the boat that took a vic/perc/oxy/aderol in am that was not prescribed to them? Probably more than you think!
Why people get their panties in a bunch over this topic is beyond me. If a head boat offends you then maybe think about taking a sponsor charter boat on here...plenty of them.
Now where did I put my Doritos?

I'll say this about when I used to smoke (can't now due to drug testing policies). If you were catching fish after you smoked, it was the greatest, most fun thing you could ever do. Smiles up to your ears. However, if you didn't or werent catching shit, you didn't want to be there and everything sucked.

Try CBD oil. All the benefits of pot( and there are many) but without the high. And no smell of smoke to offend others. And completely legal in all 50 states.
I Just started using it for the health benefits and rarely ever get seasick but it is supposed to be good for nausea so it should work

Sorry to kill the buzz here but it's not legal to smoke pot on a boat period. Captain, crew, passenger or for medical purposes.
Every Coast Guard Licensed Captain is subject to random drug testing. They send you a letter and you have 36 hours to report to a lab or risk loosing your license. I was just random tested last week and over the 10 years I've had my license, I was random tested 2 other times.
Like Joey, I don't partake any more... Makes me paranoid and all kinds of wacky thoughts going through my head.

After reading 50 some replies, it is illegal and can cost the Captain his license.
The number of you that said it could cost you your job, not only would he lose his job but he would lose his business. Not one captain has replied to this thread, but if someone could cost me my business I would be pissed.
What you do that effects only you is you business, but when you can interfere with someone's business it's time to realize this world isn't only about you.

I could care less about what people do on their own time....Not on my Boat though. Couple times in the past when I have smelled it on the guys boarding, I pulled them aside and told them the Rules, no problem.
If someone does happen to light up on the trip, they are told immediately to end it, I don't call the cops, we don't make a scene, case closed.
If I did nothing, my regs would loose all respect for me and my business and chances are I would loose them. If a State Trooper is on-board (and we have several) that are customers, he could make the Captain take the boat back to port and file charges on the Customer and the Captain. It happened many years ago to a well known Captain at the time.

Below is some information about the NJ medicinal marijuana program. You’re telling me that 2 people on the head boat you were on had one or more of the following conditions ( Sarcasm)???
Ok, ok, all joking aside, marijuana is still illegal in NJ and the law mandates a zero tolerance on for hire vessels. It is hard to believe that a captain or his employees would put their livelihood/job at stake… Then again maybe not, a lot of people are really stupid!
For all the private boaters who have responded in jest to this thread… Don’t forget, having/allowing your buddies to use Illegal drugs on board your vessel has implications too. What do you think will happen if law enforcement, i.e. – fish & game, NJ State Police, or the Coast Guard stops you and your crew is in possession or under the influence of illegal substances? You as the boat owner/operator can be stone sober, but if your crew is under the influence you will be in a world of trouble. It is your boat and what happens on it is your responsibility!
In order to become a registered patient with the Medicinal Marijuana Program (MMP), you must:
•Be diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition by a New Jersey physician registered with the MMP.
Approved debilitating medical conditions include:
•Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
•Multiple sclerosis
•Terminal cancer
•Muscular dystrophy
•Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
•Terminal illness, if the physician has determined a prognosis of less than 12 months of life.
The following conditions apply, if resistant to, or if the patient is intolerant to, conventional therapy:
•Seizure disorder, including epilepsy
•Intractable skeletal muscular spasticity
•Glaucoma
The following conditions apply, if severe or chronic pain, severe nausea or vomiting, cachexia or wasting syndrome results from the condition or treatment thereof:
•Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus
•Acquired immune deficiency syndrome
•Cancer

If possession for medicinal purposes is legal does that make smoking in public legal? What about being in federal waters and charged by coast guard under Federal Law?
If you are on a vessel that leaves state waters can you be charged with smuggling as opposed to possession when you return to the dock?
I don't know the answers but you may want to do a little research before you spark one up in public. Would hate too see anyone made an example of for something silly.
