Received a call from my taxidermist telling me that my near record musky had a 23 inch walleye in its belly. That explains the girt and where all keeper walleyes ending up. I wish he snapped the photo. Official girth 27"

Congrats on the trophy. Big fish.....Big baits. If you were in a tourney you could have entered the "eye" too!

Information like that makes it much easier to understand why so many Muskies are caught by walleye guys.BTW that was a big walleye!

Must be scary being a freshwater fish when you are 23 inches and not at the top of the food chain.

If you live lined one more big walleye before you caught it you would have had the record ;):D

What's shocking to me is that this musky eating 4-5lb walleyes and having a fresh one in its belly it went after my 2.5" jigging rapala

Very interesting. Whenever I have a bass barf up a fish after i caught it, I'm often surprised at how large their prey item was.
This is a pike in Washington someone was cleaning:

a 20" walleye is about 3pds average, maybe less. Alot of casters throw those 8ounce bulldawg soft plastics and theye are about 14" in length, Ive seen small musky in the 25" class nail them easily, its all about opportunity. Just like one of us on the couch not rly hungry and someone hands u some chips, if its easy enough you will take a few bites for some munchies :)

I was fishing walleye's one evening and a F&G officer approached.
We talked, he checked the sizes (on stringer) and after talking asked why I would keep only the minimums of 18in.(I had thrown back 24+in fish while he watched from shore)
His first question was : "You're catching Musky bait?" and I believe he thought I was keeping undersized walleye for bait.
Apparently, I could've used all of them...
The CO's I've met and talked with are a good bunch.
Despite being "cops" and being trained in the "cop" mentality. (which all of us feel, we are put under thumb)
I believe the CO's are true believers in our TRADITION and deserve the support and respect that only "WE" can lend.
HOORAH M*ther F*cker,( till the day that bullet flies from your sidearm......)
He then asked me how many Musky I'd caught. Haha
There isn't a better bait that I know ....

Do you hook a 3 lb walleye through the lips or the back?

It sounds kind of surprising but the musky you caught was a monster. He was definitely at the top of the food chain. I have caught smallmouth bass in the passaic river about 12 inches and on two occasion had pike swim right up to shore and slash at them. One of the times I had the pike on the line and he gashed it almost in half. The pike was probably around 30 inches.

There are some Youtube videos of some pretty big fish being eaten by another,In one there is a 9 inch trout being eaten by a 13 inch pike. Another shows a pike maybe 19 inches having a LM bass about 12 inches for lunch. Fascinating to watch.

This actually doesn't surprise me at all - in the spring when I'm jerk baiting, it's not uncommon for me to get 8" perch on a 6" jerkbait.

Some people don't eat anything that they'd use for bait and some people don't use anything for bait that they can eat!

I've heard of 16-inch suckers as bait, but this really amazes me.

From my Ichthyology studies I believe the usual predator pray consumption ratio in size is 1/3 of body length w some fish capable up to 1/2 (exception are deep water gulper eels and anglers). Pike and muskies been known to choke to death on too large a pray.
