I've yet to get on the ice this year due to so much work at home, as we're preparing to sell our house. Snuck out late Sunday and was on the ice about 3:00 at West Fayson Lake.
Had two flags on the first tip-up before I could get a second in, but nothing but stolen bait.
I eventually got all the lines in the water finally and settled in with my cigar and beer when that first tip up went up again. This time I bagged it, a small pickerel. Then nothing for an hour. Just as I was thinking about calling it an evening, bang, bang, bang three really good sized pickerel in the 20 plus inch range. One was on my new rig with an ice rod on an IRG-1 Ice Rigger. It was nice to battle a good sized pick on the rod instead of hand lining it in. I think I'm eventually going to go with all rods on that or similar outfits. I prefer the fight of a fish even on a small rod rather than pulling it in by hand. My last flag of the day was a perch.
Not bad for LT two hours on the ice. I also had plenty of time to smoke the cigar, have a couple of beers with just enough fish to keep it interesting.
Ice was 8 inches plus the layer of snow and slush on top.
