day two on the ice, retreated to my "home" lake due to the beating we took yesterday catching next to nothing and we were welcomed with only a slightly better day. Drilling tons of holes trying deep and shallow different jigs, just slow! although it was capped with this very nice bass that put up a fight worth double his size!

We actually had to two man this guy in, a first for me, because he was running so hard taking line and the wind was blowing the line all over the place it was getting caught in all the ice chunks.

Two slow days for us on three different lakes but this guy makes it worth the work, even though he was a few inches short of knocking out a skillful angler fish early haha. We'll shake it off and get out somewhere next weekend.

Personally I'd consider that a success. I'm not into panfish through the ice and would rather catch one or two big fish like that than a dozen perch, crappies or sunnies.

usually fish on the tip ups don't fight much and just come right in, this one made many long runs pulling the line through our hands and it took two of us to manage the line everywhere with the wind blowing and try to control this fish...that made it a lot more fun than usual.

I'd rather jig up anything rather than catch on a tip up as i'm sure most people would. but i like to keep some small med fish and do a little fish fry so i wasn't going to keep this bass obviously and so between the three of us we only had enough fish for 1 person by the end of two days.

My tape was far away at that point and i wanted to get it back quick so i didn't lay it on the tape, but judging how big it was next to the tip up i'd say 19-20"

Def nice Bass!!!!
Funny that you say that because I can't stand Jigging thru the ice! If I don't catch a fish in like five minutes I am done!!!!LOL
Would def rather bait and wait for flags!!! Most of the time I get bigger fish on the Tip Ups!
I also would rather catch one or two decent fish instead of jiggin fifty perch and bluegills!!!!!

Can't argue with big fish coming on tip ups for sure but catching fish on a jigging Rod is awesome. I like to pretend I'm a giant with a regular sized Rod... Is that weird?

It can be very productive and it keeps you occupied for sure but it's just not my style. I have seen some MONSTERS caught on those little twiggy rods!!!!
How about JackStraws's Musky last year as an example!!!!
Hey Anthony, what's on the menu for this ice season a 14lb+ walleye????

If im jiggin i go with the rat trap!! At the least im puttin a call out to a big serial killer pike.. I burnout pretty quick tho.. or if panfish keep popin flagz then of course Id work some.. half the time its so damn windy I loose contact wit the itsy bitsy stuff..

put the tip right up to the water edge and put your finger on the line, usually takes the wind out of the equation unless it's really really bad wind. i've tried the rattletraps between and mess of tipups hoping to call pike in too but no success last year with that method, i like the theory of it though so i'll keep trying it. supposed to work for walleye too...
