The entrance sign looks great, but....

What are they preserving? Poland Spring bottles, tires and plastic lawn chairs? Unfortunately you can clean that place up completely and in a year it will look the same. The Passaic is a floating trash dump.

I think it is truly amazing when you look into how many environmental groups there are in the state of New Jersey. Is this where the State stocks Pike ?? I looked into one of the largest environmental groups in New Jersey to see what they were doing, well, it was a beer tasting party !!!!!

I have ventured through that area more than a few times, but never seen it quite that choked with trash. Usually the areas upstream by the dam have less debris, but the lower portions down across from where the pipeline enters on the Garfield side are more prone to collect the garbage. A few years back there was a scout group or something like that who cleaned it up very well, but the Passaic being what it is, it just cloggs up again after a few storms with all the junk washing over the falls from upstream.
One of the biggest issues is access to that park. The gate off the access ramp to Route 21 is always locked. I've usually had to walk across the river from the Garfield side wearing my waders.
I've also heard stories about homeless people living in there, but have never seen them when I've walked around in there. It is a nice little park though, with gravel paths and a few benches and signs, only problem is that gate that's always locked!

Hey, I could use those milk crates...

Wow - that's crazy. I guess the source of all that trash is all the storm drains that dump into the Passaic. Eventually, all that plastic makes its way out to the ocean. The Huffington Post this month reported that there are 270,000 tons of plastic floating in the ocean.

Yea, I think 1 lives under the blue tarp contraption in the 1 pic. The rest live right under the bridge itself, last pic was taken from bridge, their entry area. Go there n see BUMS and a MINE-FIELD OF HUMAN SH*T!!! It's disgusting!! You would think the city of Clifton would do something!!! They cleaned the Garfield side up for a few years now it's still good, they had the SAME PROBLEM! Soo much history to this area and this is how we treat it. Where you at Clifton???

So much trash must get in the river from Paterson alone...think of the magnitude of a hands-on cleanup effort--and then the disappointment in seeing trash fill up again thereafter. I was once in Zurich, Switzerland & either a river or lake in the middle of the city--absolutely spotless, no litter at all. I see no way to avoid trash all over w/out an educated citizenry.

Improve the recreational and economic uses of Newark Bay, the Passaic River and its tributaries by removing debris and other pollutants from shorelines and waterways through in-house and community based River Restoration Programs.
